Kim summit vindicates Cold War doctrine of deterrence

President Donald Trump said he didn't like using harsh rhetoric against Kim Jong Un, but he said it helped set the table for his historic meeting with the North Korean leader.

Trump appeared to sidestep a question about him calling Kim "talented" given North Korea's humanitarian record and human rights violations by crediting Warmbier's death for bringing the two world leaders together.

"I really think that Otto is someone who did not die in vain".

He called Warmbier's death "brutal", but noted that "a lot of people started to focus on what was going on including North Korea".

Warmbier was "a very special person and he will be for a long time in my life", he said, adding that the student's parents were "good friends of mine".

"We did sanctions and all of the things that you would do".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a ground-breaking meeting with Kim at the end of April, when they agreed to stop all hostile acts and pledged to achieve "a nuclear-free Korean peninsula through complete denuclearization", without specifying how it will be done.

During the first press conference after his historic meeting with the North Korean leader, Trump said USA war games in the region would be "provocative" amid talks with Pyongyang and promised to suspend them. "We did sanctions and all of the things that you would do", Trump said.

Otto Warmbier was detained in North Korea in January 2016 after allegedly stealing a propaganda poster at his hotel during his five-day tour of the country.

Warmbier, from Wyoming, Ohio, and a student at the University of Virginia, died at the age of 22 days after he was returned to the United States in a coma.

China suggested Tuesday that the U.N. Security Council consider suspending or lifting sanctions against North Korea if the country is in compliance with U.N. resolutions and making progress in diplomatic negotiations. Trump tweeted in September 2017 that Warmbier "was tortured beyond belief by North Korea". "We are proud of Otto and miss him".

But instead, she said, the North Koreans left him in a awful place with no care to vegetate, and then acted "like we're doing the world a favor" and released him saying he had botulism - which USA doctors never confirmed.

"We're not there yet", he said. 'People say why are you doing this?
