Trump slams Trudeau, says U.S. won’t endorse G7 communique

US signs G-7 declaration calling for reduction of tariffs after tense summit with allies

White House National Trade Council Director Peter Navarro stands along the Rose Garden colonnade as he listens to a news conference between U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House on June 7, 2018 in Washington.

Trudeau, who had said at the news conference that Canada would retaliate for new USA tariffs, didn't respond to questions about Trump when the prime minister arrived at a Quebec City hotel Sunday for meetings with other world leaders.

IT WOULD BE so easy to blame Justin Trudeau for the blow-up of the G7 economic conference, to say it's all his fault that everything fell apart after Donald Trump jumped on an airplane to Singapore.

Trump has consistently railed against what he claims are unfair trade practices by some of America's biggest trade partners, including Canada. "This can not be our party", Flake tweeted on Sunday.

Kudlow sought to tie Trump's reaction to the upcoming summit with Kim Jong Un, saying the North Korean leader "must not see American weakness".

"We have done just that at this summit, registering our deep disappointment at the unjustified decision by the United States to apply tariffs to European Union steel and aluminium imports". Trump asked. "It's up to them, but Russian Federation should be in the meeting".

The leaders of the G7, the world's most powerful industrialized countries including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Japan and the USA, meet every year to discuss collaboration on issues like world economy, climate change, security and peace.

"I have made it very clear to the President that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do".

"In a matter of seconds, you can destroy trust with 280 Twitter characters", German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said when asked about Mr Trump's U-turn, adding it would take much longer to rebuild lost trust.

The apology could ease tensions after Canada's parliament condemned the personal attack on Trudeau and as Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland gets ready to meet with members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday in Washington. "We are sticking to them and whoever reneges on them is showing incoherence and inconsistency", President Emmanuel Macron's office said on Sunday in a statement to AFP news agency.

A Trudeau spokesman, Cameron Ahmad, said Saturday night that Trudeau "said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public and in private conversations" with Trump.

The Americans' criticism of Trudeau left a former Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, stumped. "These guys just pulled away and punched Canada in the face, and I think it was a line crossed and a bridge too far", Heyman said. "Well, the in-factual, the non-factual part of this was they have enormous tariffs", Kudlow said.

"That's unconscionable", Heyman said on "CNN Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin" Monday.
