Trump's trade adviser apologises for comments on Trudeau

Canada's Foreign Affairs minister met with USA senators June 13.

"The US has to remove these unfair illegal tariffs from Canada, and from its allies", she said.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland speaks with reporters after meeting with the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee at the Capitol in Washington on Wednesday.

At the G-7 summit in Quebec last week, what should have been a standard meeting between close allies turned acrimonious when Trump and his top deputies launched a slew of personal attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

That deadline has been extended several times as Canada and Mexico struggle to accommodate far-reaching USA demands for change such as a sunset clause that would allow one nation to pull out after five years.

"We decided.to continue our negotiations on NAFTA", Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said in Washington after she met U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

"We all know we will be strongest with America in our ranks - and indeed in the lead", she told the crowd of diplomats and academics.

On May 31, the Trump administration announced hefty tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum on the premise that the exports amounted to a national security threat.

She said the tariffs were "a naked example of the United States putting its thumb on the scale in violation of the very rules it helped to write".

Freeland urged the United States to preserve its global alliance of liberal democracies.

"He followed up by asking why the U.S. should "allow countries to continue to make "massive trade surpluses", asserting that it is "not fair to the people of America" and that the USA is suffering under a "$800 billion trade deficit". "But if history tells us one thing, it is that no one nation's pre-eminence is eternal".

"Facts matter. Truth matters".

"[Trudeau] really kind of stabbed us in the back", Kudlow said.

Democratic Senator Bob Menendez said he hoped Freeland would return home and share with Canadians "that the view of the president is not the view of all the American people" or a majority of senators.

President Trump activated a rarely-used 1962 trade law that allowed him to bypass Congress, and take action against countries if their trade practices broadly "threaten to impair [our] national security".

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada; he learned", Trump said wagging his finger. The Trudeau government has proposed a $16.6-billion tariff package, in retaliation for the Trump administration's decision to impose 25 per cent import duties on steel and 10 per cent on aluminum.

Canada's dollar for dollar counter duties are set to kick in July 1.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau was in Washington to join Freeland for her award ceremony.

Rather than acknowledge that, though, this President insists on listening to the false rhetoric of protectionism being whispered in his ear by Peter Navarro and others in his Administration and on pandering to an ill-informed base that views worldwide trade as something that damaging to the American economy.

However, Freeland says the three countries have agreed to continue NAFTA talks.
