Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort sentenced to prison

Paul Manafort President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman leaves Federal District Court in Washington. Prosecutors working for special counsel Robert Mueller are accusing former Trump campaign chairman

A federal judge today sent President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, to jail pending trial, after Special Counsel Robert Mueller charged him last week with witness tampering.

Trump has not yet commented on Manafort's jailing, but said Friday morning that he "feels bad" for his former campaign manager.

In one case Mr. Manafort reached out to suggest that he and a witness talk about the details of the investigation, saying he wanted to clear up what he said were inaccuracies.

"This hearing is not about politics, is not about conduct of the office of the special counsel".

Stirewalt said it is not unprecedented to put a "white collar [alleged] criminal in jail", versus one who may cause bodily harm to others, but that it is not a usual occurrence. Westling asked the judge to simply issue a more specific order for Manafort to follow while out on bail.

"You have abused the trust placed in you six months ago", she said. "I can't take away his cellphone", [the judge] said.

Mr Manafort chaired the Trump campaign for just two months before resigning in August 2016 after a news report he had received possibly illegal payments from the political party of Ukraine's former, pro-Russian president.

In 2016, Mr Manafort served as Mr Trump's campaign chairman during the Republican National Convention and has a history as a confidant to Republican presidents dating back decades.

Manafort had been on home confinement in Alexandria, Virginia, and required to wear an electronic monitoring device.

The two sides met in federal court on Friday to plead their cases for whether or not Manafort should remain under house arrest or go to jail until his trial.

Later, Trump took to Twitter, writing "Didn't know Manafort was the head of the Mob".

Manafort was accused of tampering with witnesses along with longtime associate Konstantin Kilimnik.

Mr Manafort's lawyers said in a response filed with the court that his "limited communications" did not "reflect an intent to corruptly influence a trial witness".

In a superseding indictment, the prosecutors claimed that Mr. Manafort and a close associate, Konstantin V. Kilimnik, had contacted the two witnesses this year, hoping to persuade them to testify that Mr. Manafort had never lobbied in the United States for Viktor F. Yanukovych, the pro-Moscow president of Ukraine who fled to Russian Federation in 2014 after a popular uprising.

Manafort is set to appear in Federal Court in Washington, D.C., to face felony charges connected to his political work in Ukraine. Mueller's team has said that Kilimnik has ties to Russian intelligence agencies, a claim he has previously denied.

In a Tweet, Donald Trump called the decision "very unfair".

Manafort's attorneys claim that Mueller hasn't provided them with a witness list so that they don't know whom Manafort should be forbidden to contact.

The order marked an end to nearly eight months of attempts by Manafort to lighten his house arrest restrictions after he was charged and pleaded not guilty to foreign lobbying violations.
