Taxi hits pedestrians in Moscow amid World Cup festivities

Police is Moscow have confirmed that a taxi driver crashed into a group of people - reported to have been mostly Mexico supporters - near Red Square on Saturday. Preliminary information indicated the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Russia's state-run TASS news agency, citing a source with emergency services, said that two Mexicans, two Russians, and one Ukrainian citizen were hospitalized following the incident.

Argentina took on Iceland at the Sparatak Stadium in Moscow earlier today.

The driver has been arrested after reportedly trying to flee the scene. He was shouting: "'It wasn't me'".

The driver of the taxi has been detained, officials said.

Witnesses said some of the victims were wearing the green football colours of Mexico ahead of the team's match against Germany in the city tomorrow.

The video showed the driver jumping out of the vehicle and running across the street before being apprehended.

The driver said the incident was an accident, traffic authorities said in a subsequent tweet.

The driver, a citizen of Kyrgyzstan, said he did not act on goal, according to Moscow authorities.

Russian media has said one woman was in a "serious but not critical condition", but that nobody else was seriously injured following the incident.
