Roger Federer claims 98th career title with victory in Stuttgart

Roger Federer Nick Kyrgios

The 27-year-old now holds the No. 35 position in the world rankings.

Federer was pushed all the way by the fourth-seeded Kyrgios on Saturday, who fired down 23 aces in another battling performance at the German grasscourt tournament.

The Canadian came through in two tiebreakers to upset third-seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 7-6 (2), 7-6 (1) in the quarterfinals of the ATP Tour grass-court event.

Top seed Federer will play for the 98th title of his career on Sunday against Milos Raonic.

"I was there in the most important moments, breaking Milos (in the first set) was a good effort". In the last couple of days I've not dropped serve.

"To play the two tiebreakers very disciplined and very well was the key today", Raonic said.

Roger Federer moved into the final of Stuttgart with three set win over Nick Kygios.

"I think I played very well not having played for a while", Federer added. "Maybe I'm lacking the confidence for the right decision still".

The Swiss broke twice in the first set to earn it after 32 minutes when his opponent returned long over the baseline.

A double-fault from the Canadian followed by a return victor from the Swiss set up 3 match points, with Federer needing only his first as Raonic netted a return. "There is a big difference between playing a semi and a final".

Next week, he will open his Halle bid in the first round against Aljaz Bedene.

"I thought it was the tough match that I expected against Nick".

Raonic will face Roger Federer on Sunday in Stuttgart.

Federer's 78-minute win, sealing his first Stuttgart triumph, was the flawless tonic for the Swiss in the build-up to defending his Wimbledon crown, having extended his unbeaten 12-month sequence in grasscourt matches to 16.

As he takes things one step at a time, Federer is not yet ready to start concentrating on the job ahead at the All England Club.

"I haven't faced many break points so far this week", Raonic said.
