‘We will not apologize:’ Homeland Security chief Nielsen defends immigration policy

Democrats, activists rally against Trump's family separation policy

Sanders gets best reception at early 2020 audition Man indicted for threatening Bernie Sanders, March for Our Lives protesters MORE (D-Calif.) on Monday called on Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to resign over the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy that separates families at the U.S. -Mexico border.

The reporter then challenged Nielsen on her previous claim that the children are all being well-cared for, saying "how can you make that claim if you don't know where they are?"

"If you commit a crime, police will take you to jail regardless of whether you have a family", Nielsen told a gathering of law enforcement officials in New Orleans.

"Operationally what that means is we will have to separate your family", Nielsen said, referring to the Trump administration's decision to refer for criminal prosecution all immigrants who cross the border illegally.

The policy has drawn global fury, with United Nations human rights chief, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, on Monday urging the U.S.to halt the "unconscionable" policy.

That's from WaPo, which reported in the same piece that Trump is known to tell aides that Nielsen's "not tough enough" and that she's a "Bush person".

"But President Trump is leaning into that pretty hard".

"I hate the children being taken away", he said Friday.

Democrat representative Mark Pocan, from Wisconsin, who joined senators Merkley and Van Hollen in Texas, said that he thought Mr Trump believed the policy was popular with his political base.

Amid the public outcry, the Trump administration has attempted to blame Democrats for what's occurring, despite no substantial evidence to support this claim, and even went as far to deny the policy of separating migrant children from their parents exists.

"I would do nearly anything to deter the people from Central America to getting on this very, very unsafe network that brings them up through Mexico into the United States", Kelly added.

"We can secure our borders without taking actions that are morally wrong and shameful", Kasich said.

"We do not have a policy of separating families at the border". If the Democrats would sit down, instead of obstructing, we could have something done very quickly, good for the children, good for the country, good for the world. Before the briefing, some reporters in attendance had been listening to audio obtained by ProPublica of 10 Central American child migrants reacting with grief and confusion after being separated from their parents at the border.

"We do not want to separate children from their parents", Sessions said, but he stressed that the administration has a policy of prosecuting adults who enter the country illegally. "If you smuggle illegal aliens across an extraordinarily risky journey, we will prosecute you".

The DHS secretary added, "if you are seeking asylum for your family, there is no reason to break the law and illegally cross between ports of entry".
