Plane carrying Saudi Arabia's World Cup team catches fire

The South American side are set to field a side containing seven players aged 31 or over in their Group A clash in Rostov-on-Don.

As Uruguay fans whipped up a fervent atmosphere on the eve of their team's World Cup game against Saudi Arabia, supporters expressed their gratitude towards coach Oscar Tabarez whilst admitting their concern over the form of Luis Suarez. "It was a small fire in one of the engines, the right engine, but the plane landed safely", association president Ahmad Al Harbi told Saudi sports TV channel KSA.

The Saudi Football Association issued a statement saying that "The Saudi Football Federation wishes to reassure everyone about the safety of all the members of the mission of the national team after a minor technical malfunction in an engine".

The players could be seen leaving the plane - a Russian Airlines Airbus A319-100 - shortly after landing.

After losing their first Group A game 5-0 against hosts Russia, Saudi Arabia take on Uruguay on Wednesday in their second World Cup fixture.

In another potential source of reassurance for the perennially underachieving Saudis, the usually ruthless Suarez missed three chances against Egypt on Friday in their opening game.
