Trump digs in on immigration amid family separation crisis

Trump blames Democrats for immigration controversies

The first lady, through her spokeswoman, said she "hates to see" the separations, though she did not acknowledge the separations are a result of Trump administration policy and called for "both sides of the aisle" to pass immigration reform.

Almost 2,000 children have been separated from their parents in the six week following the administration's announcement of a "zero-tolerance policy" against illegal border crossings.

Pressure is building on the White House and Congress as more, including some Republicans, have joined Democrats in urging an end to a controversial policy that would separate children from their parents if they get caught crossing the US border illegally.

Moderate Republicans have been trying to negotiate a plan that would reduce family separations and also open a door to citizenship for young immigrants brought to the U.S.as children and who stayed illegally. Almost 2,000 children have been separated from their parents and guardians and placed into holding facilities between April 19 and May 31.

Former first lady Laura Bush, wife of former GOP President George W. Bush, wrote a Washington Post op-ed published Sunday night comparing the family separations to World War II Japanese-American internment camps, calling the practice "immoral".

As reported by the Hill, the Trump's immigration policy is facing a backlash from both Democrats and Republicans, who call it inhuman to separate the minors from their families during immigration.

Speaking on Tuesday morning (AEST), the president blamed Democrats blocking his immigration policy for the separations and declared he would keep the U.S. from becoming "a migrant camp".

"These images are eerily reminiscent of the Japanese American internment camps of World War Two, now considered to have been one of the most shameful episodes in U.S. history", she added.

Nielsen said that releasing parents with their children amounts to a "get out of jail free card" policy for illegal immigrants. Children traveling with adults are separated from their families and taken into USA custody. The president also continued to blame Democrats, tweeting in all caps "CHANGE THE LAWS!" For now, the press and the public, even members of Congress, get to see and hear only what the Trump administration allows. Next week, Congress is set to vote on two immigration proposals - the conservative McCaul-Goodlatte bill, and a more moderate House GOP bill.

President Donald Trump says he hates "the breakup of families" but has repeatedly falsely blamed Democrats for a law requiring it, the AP reports. Republican lawmakers are growing ever more concerned about negative effects on their re-election campaigns this fall, and Trump was to travel to Capitol Hill Tuesday for a strategy session on possible legislation. Jeff Merkley, of OR, led a group of Senate and House members on a tour of the U.S. -Mexico border to "further investigate" the policy that is separating migrant families.

Warning of "perilous times with no shortage of problems", former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton blasted the Trump administration's policy of forced family separation during a New York City speech on Monday.
