Trump Announces He Will Sign Executive Order To End Family Separations At Border

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) called out the Left.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order ending a weeks-old policy of separating children from families crossing into the United States illegally, something that had horrified and anguished people across the world.

"And then she's going to be the one responsible for separating families", said Arthur, now a senior fellow in law and policy at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) in Washington, D.C.

As children can not go to federal jail they are sent to other detention centres while their parents await trial. That's what he did on Wednesday.

"It's about keeping families together while at the same time making sure that we have a very powerful, very strong border", Mr Trump told reporters.

Justice Department lawyers have been working to find a legal workaround for a previous class-action settlement that set policies for the treatment and release of unaccompanied children who are caught at the border. "And we also add new judges so that we can expedite the hearing they're entitled to, and dispose of their case either by sending them back together as a family or admitting them into the country as a family". Tearing children from their parents' arms may not show a lot of heart, he plainly believes, but it's strong, and the last thing you want is to be "really, really pathetically weak". An assessment is expected Thursday at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas.

The new order also held no apparent implications for 52 people from India confined in a federal detention facility at Oregon, Washington state.

Homeland Security officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Some prominent critics are also wondering whether Trump's slapdash order - which managed to misspell the word "separation" - will make much difference. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the effort before its official announcement. Hatch and 12 other GOP senators - including John McCain, R-Arizona, and Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee, - co-signed a letter on Tuesday to the Justice Department asking that the administration pause the separation of families until Congress addresses the issue.

The House of Representatives planned to vote on Thursday on two bills created to halt the practice of separating families and to address other immigration issues. The immigrants plead guilty to illegally entering the USA, and they are typically sent either to jail or directly to an immigration detention center. "Republicans want security. But I am working on something - it never ends!" he wrote.

Trump's said the order does not alter the "zero tolerance" policy itself that the administration put in place in April.

ICE operates two large family detention centers in Texas and a smaller facility in Pennsylvania, with a combined capacity for about 3,000 beds.

Advocates slammed Trump's executive order, saying it ended the separation of families only to require that DHS jail children along with their parents while criminal prosecutions proceeded.

However, a 1997 landmark settlement, known as the Flores agreement, generally bars the government from keeping children in immigration detention for more than 20 days.

The images of crying toddlers among the almost 2,000 children who were taken from their parents during a six-week period this spring are appalling.
