The new cover of TIME forces Donald Trump to face immigrant children

The Story Behind the Viral Photo of a Crying Child at the Border

In an interview with NPR, Moore said he was photographing U.S. Border Patrol near the border in McAllen, Texas when they found a group of undocumented immigrants. The mother and child were put into a van and driven off soon after, presumably to a detention center for processing.

Trump had initially responded to criticisms by claiming that it was not in his power to reverse the family separation policy, which his own administration had implemented.

An upcoming Time magazine cover will feature a photo illustration of President Donald Trump looking down and a crying toddler looking up, highlighting its story on the USA immigration policy.

"Welcome to America", reads the headline on the latest cover of Time magazine, released this morning via Twitter.

The photo of the crying child was captured by award-winning photographer John Moore on June 12. "I had to stop and take deep breaths", Moore told TIME.

The heading "Welcome to America" accompanies the photo, which TIME says asks the question, "What kind of a country are we?" "Ever since I took those pictures, I think about that moment often".

President Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order aimed at halting the family separation policy.

Moore noted that the mother and child were together when they left with authorities and he didn't see the pair formally separated, nor has he been able to confirm whether or not they were separated afterward, though the policy indicates that they would be held separately.

Moore told the Post that in the dark he had not been able to count the number of women and children. That bright light you see on their faces coming from US Border Patrol.

The new Trump administration policy, which went into effect in May, sought to maximise criminal prosecutions of people caught trying to enter the USA illegally.

The policy that resulted in kids and their parents being separated at the border was enacted by Trump, whose administration then went back and forth between blaming it on Democrats and denying it existed.
