Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Victory Is a Canary in the Dems' Coal Mine

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez

In posters, on Ocasio-Cortez's campaign website, and plastered on the side of an "Ocasio 2018-mobile" that made the rounds through the Bronx and Queens communities within her district, Ocasio-Cortez's visual brand features a portrait of her center stage against a sea of deep violet-blue, her hair tied back in a low bun, with a look of undeterred gumption on her face as she looks upward and beyond, her gaze directed not at the viewer, but slightly askew and into the distance, as if to propel our attention onward to the future. They have become radicalized. She appealed to a widespread sense among urban Democrats that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama had been insufficiently progressive and had allowed Mr. Trump's rise by compromising too much.

Opting for bold lettering and a flat design treatment that forgoes drop shadows, gradients, American flag motifs, and other visual cliches, the identity intentionally avoids pretentious signifiers to refreshing effect; one might even liken the energetic campaign visuals to a local poster bill. It just isn't gonna happen.

"You have given this country hope, you have given this country proof that when you knock on your neighbor's door, when you come to them with love, when you let them know that no matter your stance, you are there for them - that we can make change", she said.

Colbert asked Ocasio-Cortez how she managed to pull out a victory after the polls, just a few weeks ago, had shown her down by 36 points. McCain asked, to Ocasio-Cortez's agreement.

Following her upset victory, Ocasio-Cortez didn't hesitate to get in her digs at the commander-in-chief, saying there were "serious grounds" to show Trump had violated the Constitution's Emoluments Clause "from day one" of his administration.

Her campaign centered on a progressive agenda of Medicare for all, jobs for all and immigration for all.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez was an avid user of social media, coming across as passionate and engaged in a way that underlined the generational divide with her older rival.

Russia Supports OPEC Plan to Lift Oil Production
Trump slapped fresh sanctions on Tehran in May and market watchers expect Iran's output to drop by a third by the end of 2018. But Falih said pro-rata quota reallocations did not have to be strict, meaning Saudi wanted to fill the gaps left by others.

"What we need to do is lay out a plan and a vision that people can believe in, and getting into Twitter fights with the president is not exactly, I think, where we're going to find progress as a nation", she said.

Pelosi, who has vowed to stay on as leader, downplayed the election results.

Crowley, who has been a Congressman since 1999, was touted as the next speaker of the House (if the Democrats gain the majority in midterm elections).

Rep. Barbara Lee is considering a bid for a Democratic leadership position in the House of Representatives in the wake of the stunning primary election loss of a high-ranking Democrat this week.

Pelosi responded, "Well I'm female, I'm progressive, I'm - and the rest".

"We met a machine with a movement", the progressive Ocasio-Cortez told NY1 after defeating Crowley. "Two out of three ain't bad".
