'We will not obey': Hundreds of women rally in D.C. to protest Trump's immigration policy

A main event in Washington, D.C.is expected to draw tens of thousands of marchers, two days after thousands of women marched to Capitol Hill and almost 600-including Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.)-were arrested for demonstrating in the Hart Senate Office Building. "Shame! Shame!" and "This is what democracy looks like".

Protesters hold up their hands as they fill the center atrium and upper levels lining the Hart Senate Office Building in protest of the separation of immigrant families, Thursday, June 28, 2018, on Capitol Hill in Washington. At one point, Merkley donned a foil sheet as he gave a TV interview.

And they understand that this is far beyond politics.

Cheered on by some Democratic lawmakers who walked among them, the women said they were pushed to the protest by President Trump's zero tolerance policy which sparked separations of children from their parents.

House Democrat Pramila Jayapal was among those arrested.

"I'm proud to have been arrested with them to put myself in the camp of people who believe that the United States is better", Jayapal said in a video on Twitter. The action lasted more than two hours.

Hundreds of marches are expected to cap several weeks of outrage over the policies that have resulted in more than 2,500 immigrant children being separated from their parents in the weeks since the federal government started prosecuting anyone who crosses the border illegally.

Capitol Police said in a statement that about 575 people were charged with unlawfully demonstrating and they would be processed at the scene and released. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY, and Sen.

It is rare that the Capitol Police would arrest a member on Capitol grounds.

Trump's critics have blasted the executive order he signed allowing children to stay with their detained parents, saying incarceration of an entire family is also wrong. During their sit-in they called for the reunification of families and the dissolution of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. And eight people were arrested outside an ICE building in Portland, Oregon, that has been closed because of a round-the-clock demonstration.
