House Republicans Face Another Week Of Fighting Over Immigration

Detained Children

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday failed to pass a legislative fix for the nation's broken immigration system, despite outrage over a now-discontinued border arrest policy that separated immigrant children from their families.

Trump's tweet encouraged House Republicans to "PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY".

Republicans also failed to pass a more conservative immigration bill last week, but that bill ― which was simply a hardline immigration measure introduced by Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) back in January ― actually garnered 193 Republican votes.

Ryan said the broader bill would resolve the issue of young adults who were brought to the United States illegally as children; focus on a merit-based immigration system; and secure US borders and the rule of law.

Trump said he hadn't gotten "overly excited" about the House bill because it wouldn't pass the Senate.

The main bill on the floor Wednesday would have granted a pathway to citizenship to an estimated 1.2 million illegal immigrants, according to the Migration Policy Institute. "The ideal way to solve it is to have Congress pass legislation", she said.

After months of trying to bridge the chasm between moderates and conservatives and two postponed votes, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., labeled the legislation "a great consensus bill" and tried putting the best face on the likely outcome.

While Republicans called the measure a "compromise bill," the dealmaking occurred exclusively among members of the GOP. His comments after the vote echoed a tweet from him last week, which was widely interpreted as a signal that Republicans shouldn't vote for it either.

All Democrats voted against both bills.

Even immigration legislation tailored to the conservatives wing of the GOP went down in spectacular flames by a vote of 300-121.

Both were presented to the House of Representatives by Rep.

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan said Thursday that he wanted that conservative bill - written by Rep.

Trump was indecisive about supporting any legislation.

Most of the 36-member Texas delegation voted against the bill, including all the Democrats.

It also provides for the allocation of $25 billion on securing the border with Mexico, including the construction of the wall.

"They want to see this issue continue through the election", said Buck on air, "because they think it is a good issue that divides Americans and will help energize their base."

Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a Washington state representative who is chairwoman of the Republican conference, plans to introduce a bill created to pass quickly and prevent immigrant families from being separated.

Despite all of the effort, the bill's would have faced trouble in the U.S. Senate had it passed out of the House.

"I want them to do what they want", Trump said in the Oval Office.

Faced with both domestic and worldwide outrage, Trump last week signed an executive order to halt the family separation practice, but made no specific provisions for those already split apart.
