Google admits third-party devs can access your Gmail messages

Software Developers are Scanning the Inboxes of Gmail Users

A new report concerning Gmail has millions of users freaked out about who (or what) is reading their emails. The access settings allow data companies and app developers to see user's emails, including recipient addresses, timestamps, and entire messages.

"Some people might consider that to be a dirty secret", says Mr. Loder. In some cases, staff were able to read users' private emails, according to the "Wall Street Journal'".

Some examples of apps that request access to your inbox include Earny, Unroll.Me and Boomerang. If you're a Google Apps for Business user, you can set permissions so that your users can't even grant those sorts of permissions, either per app or in general.

The company said before any non-Google app which can access Gmail is published, it goes through a rigorous vetting process. The result of all this, ideally, is that the only people with access to your email are developers making services that you want to use, and who you are happy to give access to.

To recall, Google back in 2017, said its computers will soon stop reading the emails of its Gmail users to personalise their ads.

The category that you'll want to pay particularly close attention to, however, are apps that are labeled "Third-party apps with account access". At one point about two years ago, Return Path employees read about 8,000 unredacted emails to help train the company's software, people familiar with the episode say. In June previous year, Google stopped scanning user's emails, which was being done to provide personalised ads.

"We make it possible for applications from other developers to integrate with Gmail - like email clients, trip planners and customer relationship management (CRM) systems - so that you have options around how you access and use your email", Suzanne Frey, the director of Security, Trust, & Privacy of Google Cloud, wrote. But some companies that use Google's apps in their workplaces also require their employees to use their Google login to sign into other apps and services. No, it's not Google, this time around, but this privacy-infringing feature does affect Gmail, which happens to be the world's top email service. Google's own employees read emails only "in very specific cases where you ask us to and give consent, or where we need to for security purposes, such as investigating a bug or abuse", the company said in a written statement.
