Tearful Park claims Women's PGA Championship in playoff

GRAND RAPIDS MI- JUNE 17 Lee Anne Pace of South Africa hits her tee shot on the second hole during the final round of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give at Blythefield Country Club

Jun 29, 2018; Kildeer, IL, USA; So Yeon Ryu hits from the fairway on the 7th hole during the second round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship golf tournament at Kemper Lakes Golf Club. The two, along with Nasa Hataoka of Japan, finished the 72 holes tied at 10-under. Hataoka eagled a pair of par 5s, the seventh and the 11. She was already off the course when Ryu made a 30-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole to go two strokes up at 12 under. Park raised her arms and placed her hands on her head before hugging her caddie and wiping away tears.

"Actually, this is my first time being this emotional", Park told a post-round press conference through an interpreter.

"Winning this tournament is going to be huge because I never really dreamed about becoming a Grand Slammer", she said. "I think I lack that sense of tension". "That's what really made me cry".

Further down the leaderboard, two-time major champion Lydia Ko shot a second-round 66 but saw her hopes of contending falter when she followed that up with a 73 and final-day 76, ultimately finishing up tied for 31st. At the 1961 U.S. Women's Open, Mickey Wright finished six shots ahead of Betsy Rawls.

Less than a year after capturing the U.S. Women's Open, the sweet-swinging Park doubled her major tally when she sank a 10-foot birdie putt at the second extra hole to edge Ryu at Kemper Lakes in Kildeer, Illinois. "She also had to battle herself to win this one".

Park began her sophomore campaign slowly and missed two cuts in her first seven starts, after not missing any in 23 events in 2017.

She also won the Meijer LPGA Classic two weeks ago in MI for her sixth LPGA Tour victory.

"It was a really long round today, and I can't still believe that I'm sitting right next to this trophy", Park said.

Fifth-ranked Ryu and sixth-ranked Park each birdied the first play-off hole, the par-four 18th, while Nataoka was eliminated with a par.

But that lead disappeared on the very next hole, the par-3 17th, where Ryu found water off the tee. Park pumped her first in celebration, and went on to make par.

South Korean Ryu So-yeon had a little piece of good fortune but also made her own luck as she surged to a three-stroke lead in the third round at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship outside Chicago on Saturday.

Law's compatriot Charley Hull fared less well, however, as she dropped to joint 21st, firing five bogeys and two birdies to finish the round three-over par and on one under overall.
