Statue of Liberty climber cheered as she pleads not guilty

Police: Newspaper gunman planned deadly attack carefully

The woman who scaled the base of the Statue of Liberty to protest the Trump administration's immigration policies has been identified as Therese Patricia Okoumou.

A woman climbed up the robes of the statue as part of a protest to the separation of migrant families and remained up there for almost three hours before law enforcement managed to take her into custody. "And when we got her, she couldn't go any further, and I think she realized that her time was up there", Glacken said.

Outside a Manhattan federal courthouse, where she pled not guilty to all charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing, Okoumou cited former first lady Michelle Obama in her remarks.

A woman climbed the exterior of the structure of the Statue of Liberty and then sat down by one of the statue's feet around 4 p.m., authorities said.

I can think of no better time than the fourth of July, nor no better way to draw attention to the violence that is being done in the name of borders than to physically transcend those hallowed words at the base of the Statue of Liberty: Give me your exhausted, your poor, your huddled masses. Okoumou kept her stance for the next three hours, sometimes walking on the pedestal, waving a T-shirt that said, "Trump Care Makes Us Sick" or lying on her stomach. Her protest turned into a almost three-hour standoff with police.

Okoumou is affiliated with the protest group Rise and Resist, according to Martin Joseph Quinn, an organizer of the group. "We understand and share her desire to see the immediate release of children from detention and reunion with their parents".

The National Park Service chose to shut down the park hours before its 6:15 p.m. closing time and evacuated more than 4,000 visitors from Liberty Island as a precaution.

Therese Okoumou said Thursday after a court appearance on misdemeanor charges that her protest was spontaneous.

A woman appears to be climbing up the Statue of Liberty on July 4, 2018, in NY.

Okoumou was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo before moving to NY, according to Jamie Bauer, another protester.

If convicted, Okoumou, 44, of Staten Island, would face up to six months behind bars on each count.

President Donald Trump, during a campaign rally in Montana, called her a "clown". The NYPD Emergency Services Unit officers were finally able to get her down.

The group staged a protest against the Trump administration's immigration policies at the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday, hanging an "Abolish ICE" banner at the base of the statue.

Outside court afterward, Okoumou thanked the U.S. Park Police for their courtesy and professionalism, but said the government's "draconian policy" on immigration had to end.
