Thai rescuer in cave dies from lack of oxygen

Thai Navy divers have brought in substantial supplies - including food and water for at least two weeks along with aluminum blankets, with support from Australian and other worldwide divers, according to a statement from the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Saman was 38 and is survived by his wife, his colleagues said.

CNN described his cause of death as "due to a lack of air while attempting to return to a command center" inside the cave.

A senior army commander, Maj Gen Chalongchai Chaiyakam, said the most pressing mission now was to provide an oxygen line to reach the group.

"His job was to deliver oxygen".

In the inky darkness on Monday night, the under-16 footballers and their coach had huddled on a slippery rock ledge for a 10th day, trying to stay above the fast-flowing water in the partially flooded cave to stay alive.

In a "message of support and solace", FIFA's president Gianni Infantino invited the boys to travel to Moscow, saying the organisation had been "anxiously following the news of the rescue operation".

Other members of the soccer community sent words of encouragement, including Liverpool's charismatic coach Jurgen Klopp, who said everyone is following the news and hoping they come out safely.

However, one of the rescuers sadly lost his life while trying to help them escape.

However doctors have confirmed the boys are malnourished along with their 25 year-old coach, who sacrificed his scant food rations for the children.

It's taken even experienced rescue divers up to five hours to safely navigate the unsafe cave channels to reach the team.

SEAL commander Arpakorn Yookongkaew confirmed the experienced diver was working in a volunteer capacity and died during an overnight mission in which he was placing oxygen canisters.

Dwindling oxygen levels in the cave complex and weather forecasts predicting more heavy rain added to the pressure on authorities to work out a rescue plan. The idea is to get some headroom so the boys would not be reliant on scuba apparatus for a long stretch and could keep their heads above water.

Authorities said they were still exploring other options, such as scouring the mountainside for other ways into the cave and finding faster ways to pump water from the cave.

Oxygen has gotten low because of the large number of people now in the cave.

He said he asked Thai navy SEALs in charge of extraction plans to estimate what sort of a risk would be involved to take them out and "what kind of readiness we can have today and decide if we can take that chance".

"We originally thought the young boys could stay safe inside the cave for quite a long time but circumstances have changed".

"In the previous days we were fighting with time".

They are also cooperating with Thai Navy colleagues and the wider worldwide dive teams to stock dive tanks and other equipment throughout the route to aid the eventual evacuation of the isolated cavern.

The boys have drawn worldwide attention, and the USA and more than half-dozen other nations are aiding the rescue.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk tweeted on Friday that engineers from his firms - SpaceX and The Boring Company - were heading to Thailand to see if they could assist the rescue.
