Nawaz Sharif jailed for 10 years in corruption case

In Friday's ruling, the court also sentenced Sharif's daughter, Maryam Nawaz, to seven years in a case stemming from documents leaked from a Panama law firm while her husband, Mohammad Safdar, got a year's sentence for giving false information to investigators. Maryam's husband and PML-N lawmaker Muhammad Safdar was sentenced to one year in prison, prosecution lawyer Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi said.

After the conviction, it was not sure if Sharif and Maryam would come back to face rigorous imprisonment.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter, Maryam Nawaz, had filed her papers to contest the July 25 elections from NA-127 and PP-173.

"This decision is based on injustice".

Sharif's daughter, Maryam, widely seen as his chosen political heir, was sentenced to seven years in prison.

The verdict, a potentially significant boost for the main opposition party led by former World Cup cricketer Imran Khan, immediately raised questions over whether Sharif will return to Pakistan from London, where his wife is receiving cancer treatment.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) rejected the verdict, and Sharif's younger brother, Shahbaz, pledged to challenge the order. According to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court, Sharif family failed to show proper money trail behind purchase of such high-valued apartments.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Putin several days after he stops in Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. Trump will sit down with Putin in Helsinki on July 16, the first formal one-on-one meeting between the two leaders.

The court also ordered the seizure of the Sharif family's four apartments at Avenfield House, a luxury building next to Hyde Park in London.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was on Friday sentenced to 10 years in prison by the accountability court here in a corruption case, the media reported. He denies drawing the monthly salary. Exit polls have already predicted a hung National Assembly with a close race between Sharifs' PML-N and Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). "The decision is flawed, politically motivated & has glaring loopholes", Shehbaz Sharif said in a series of tweets. "Even with institutional pressure and this verdict, the party is maintaining its position", he said.

He has framed the charges against him as a conspiracy by the powerful military, which has ruled Pakistan for roughly half its 70-year history.

But the military ended Sharif's second stint in power in 1999 in a bloodless coup.

Khan is running on a socially conservative, anti-corruption platform.

Analysts believe that if they return, it might boost the chances of good showing in elections by the PML-N due to sympathy vote.

The agency had also named Sharif's sons - Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz - as accused in the three cases.
