Trump Expected to Unveil Supreme Court Nominee Monday Night

President Donald Trump is nominating influential conservative Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court as he seeks to shift the nation's highest court further to the right.

A third finalist, Amy Comey Barrett, was seen at her home in IN just a few hours before Trump was set to unveil his nominee at a White House ceremony. As you may remember, he spent a good part of his campaign talking about this issue; this was a big reason why people voted for him. But he had made his final decision, according to a person with knowledge of the president's thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The president will unveil his choice from the White House at 9 p.m. EDT.

Hardiman had a personal connection to the president, having served with Trump's sister on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia.

Raymond Kethledge of MI, who also has many high-profile supporters who see him as a positive alternative to the other three.

The president has been lobbied in the final hours of his selection process by both supporters and opponents of the four candidates, all of whom are federal appeals court judges with conservative records.

"If that nominee is from the pre-approved list selected by Leo and the Heritage Foundation, every one ought to understand what it means for the freedom of women to make their own healthcare decisions, and for the protection for Americans with preexisting conditions".

Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, said in a statement, "I join millions of Americans in congratulating Judge Kavanaugh for his nomination, a well-respected jurist widely regarded for his/her intellect, temperament, as well as for his/her dedication to the Constitution". He was an author of the Starr Report, which urged the House to impeach the president for lying about a sexual affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. She said the Senate "should confirm his nomination without delay".

If confirmed by the Senate, the nominee would replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

The minority party - unable to block the nominee unless they lure some Republican senators to their side - have stressed the high stakes of the president's decision as they prepare for the confirmation battle ahead.

But at least three Democratic moderates announced they would not be attending: Sens.

"There is no one in America who is more qualified for this position and no one who is more deserving", Trump said of his nominee".

Mr Kavanaugh has served on the DC Circuit Court since 2006, and has a strong conservative record on issues of protecting gun ownership, opposing a ban on semi-automatic rifles and showing scepticism over environmental regulations put in place by the Obama administration.

"From the perspective of judicial conservatives, Trump really can't lose here", Josh Blackman, an associate professor at South Texas College of Law, told AFP.

U.S. Senate candidate Mitt Romney tweeted his support for Kavanaugh. Perhaps it will fire up Democrats to embark on the decades-long quest to remake the ideological balance of the court that the GOP has used to enthuse its grassroots voters and that Trump harnessed in 2016.

Reporters and camera crews are staking out the homes of the four finalists, looking for any sign of movement toward an airport, or, in Kavanaugh's case, toward the White House. The White House said today that former Sen.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) insisted Sunday on NBC News' "Meet the Press" that delaying Trump's nominee as a Democratic bloc is even more important than the reelection hopes of vulnerable red-state senators struggling to retain their seats by supporting the nominee.

This time, the Republicans have a simple majority in the Senate (51 votes needed), but in an election year anything can happen.

With Senator John McCain battling cancer in his home state of Arizona, Republicans can now only muster 50 votes.
