Trump Confident Kim Will 'Honor' Their Contract, Handshake On Denuclearization

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo raised the issue of a detained American man of Vietnamese descent during meetings with senior Vietnamese officials in Hanoi on Monday, a U.S. State Department spokeswoman said.

Pompeo's latest trip to North Korea has drawn particular attention because it was the first high-level meeting in which discussion touched on specific steps to denuclearize the North, following the historic summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12. But he maintained that progress is being made. "The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimize the work that we've achieved".

While few think that the world would be better off with increased tensions between the USA and North Korea - except perhaps national security adviser John Bolton - Trump's pathetic attempts at diplomacy have squandered an actual opportunity to move toward long-term peace.

During Mr Pompeo's trip relations between the USA and North Korea appeared to take a dive as Pyongyang accused the United States of a "gangster-like mindset" during the high-level negotiations.

The United States depends on China to enforce crippling sanctions against North Korea.

Pompeo said the two sides had discussed "modalities" for the destruction of a missile engine testing facility and agreed to form a working group to determine how to verify North Korea's denuclearization.

Kim made a broad commitment in Singapore to "work toward denuclearization" but did not give details on how or when he would dismantle North Korea's nuclear programme. Trump offered security guarantees to Pyongyang and pledged to suspend the large-scale military drills with South Korea.

For the USA, it means North Korea will abandon its nuclear program and give up its arsenal under what it calls a "complete, verifiable, and irreversible" process.

"I think it was a pretty bad start to the process, but it doesn't mean it's over yet", said Hill, noting that North Korea talks were tough by nature.

"In regards to those who talked to me, it is clear that there were some shortcomings in regards to how they were brought to South Korea", Quintana said, referring to some of the restaurant workers who defected to South Korea in April 2016. "Most of the time you come back empty-handed", Hill added.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's negotiations over the weekend were even more confirmation that the president and his administration have little grasp of what they're doing. The North's state media normally lead their television bulletins and front pages with Kim's doings, but a seven-day absence from the headlines, including during Pompeo's recent visit, had prompted speculation on his whereabouts among Korea-watchers. "But it's an old plan", said Kim, who teaches North Korean studies at Dongguk University in Seoul and runs a small private economic research firm. There will never be a friendly solution to the North Korea problem if this continues to happen! "It is not for the United Nations, not for the Republic of Korea or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to have a say in this regard". "No one walked away from that, they're still equally committed, Chairman Kim is still committed". -South Korea military exercises, a peace treaty, and the end of the US nuclear umbrella - just as they've been doing for the last two decades.

In fact, near the end of the statement, KCNA quoted the spokesman as saying "we still cherish our good faith in President Trump". "But, it seems that the US misunderstood our goodwill and patience".

"Particularly, they have suggested that they are disappointed by the USA insistence on focusing on the denuclearisation plans over what they described as big-picture issues", she said.
