Chelsea sign Jorginho from Napoli on five-year deal

Antonio Conte

According to several northern reporters, in what has all the signs of a briefing from the club, City had agreed a €50million deal with Napoli, and believe Jorginho had his heart set on a move to the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola found that out for himself when his Manchester City side faced a Maurizio Sarri led Napoli in the Champions League.

Conte did manage to add to Chelsea's trophy cabinet, with a Premier League and an FA Cup title the honours achieved under the Italian.

Media reports said Conte's departure would take to 85 million pounds the amount Chelsea has spent on paying off sacked managers - nearly the record fee Manchester United paid in 2016 for France midfielder Paul Pogba.

A key piece of evidence will be the text message Conte is reported to have sent Diego Costa while he was a Chelsea player.

Chelsea Football Club and Antonio Conte have parted company.

Conte's future with the Roman Abramovich-owned club has looked uncertain for months, however, with Chelsea failing to qualify for the coming season's Champions League after finishing fifth last term.

The Italian's main gripe for the past year was Chelsea's failure to land the signings he really wanted for its Premier League title defence. Can they compete with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United? "I wish you every success in the future". He was replaced by former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti in May with the Naples club seeking to end Juventus' dominance in the league.

Chelsea hope that Sarri's appointment and Jorginho's likely arrival, coupled with further signings to come, will help convince Eden Hazard to spurn interest from Real Madrid and sign a new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.

But even so, Chelsea's announcement on Friday was quite something...
