Chicago clashes after United States police kill black man

Members of the Chicago police department scuffle with an angry crowd at the scene of a police involved shooting in Chicago on Saturday

The scuffle turned violent; protesters reportedly tossed rocks and bottles and jumped on police cars, and police hit protesters with batons as protesters returned punches.

Footage from body-worn cameras and surveillance cameras shows that a man who was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer was armed with what appeared to be a handgun, authorities said Sunday.

The suspect then fled in a vehicle with another person, who was arrested when officers found the vehicle.

On Sunday morning, the streets where the melee over the police-involved shooting broke out were eerily silent, although another protest was scheduled for later in the day.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said its the quickest he has ever ordered such video released and that he hoped to dispel rumors that Harith Augustus, 37, was unarmed. On Saturday, patrol chief Fred Waller said officers patrolling on foot tried to question Augustus over a "bulge around his waistband" that suggested he was armed.

Police said he had a semi-automatic weapon along with magazines of ammunition, the report said.

Some people at the scene alleged that a woman police officer shot Augustus at least five times in the back while he ran away, the Chicago SunTimes reported. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of stlucianewsonline.com, its sponsors or advertisers.

At one point during the incident, an officer shot the unidentified man, who was later taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

He said Augustus' family were in favour of releasing the video for the same reason.

About 50 protesters on Sunday night marched from the spot where the shooting occurred on the South Side of Chicago.

In a statement, the city's Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it's committed to a thorough, objective and unbiased investigation of the shooting.

Van Dyke was charged with murder.

A third officer was shot while searching for the suspect, who barricaded himself inside a home less than a mile from the motel.

Residents had asked for more police presence in the area where the shooting took place, Waller added.

The decision to make video public less than 24 hours after the incident was a notable departure from police department policy of officer-involved shootings.

Chicago police patrol chief Fred Waller told a news conference that a crowd became combative after the shooting earlier Saturday, throwing bottles and jumping on top of a squad vehicle.

Though the officer's name has not been released, the police department said he is relatively new to the force and they have placed him on 30 days of administrative duty. The teen's death led to the police chief being ousted and a series of reforms aimed at preventing future police abuses and to hold officers accountable.
