Man Dies Of Bacterial Infection After Eating Oysters In Restaurant

Florida resident dies from bacterial infection after eating oyster

A Sarasota man died from the bacteria Vibrio Vulnificus after eating raw oysters.

A 71-year-old man died after eating raw oysters contaminated with a flesh eating bacteria. The report also stated that the man had underlying medical issues.

Vibrio vulnificus bacteria are typically found in salt water and in raw or undercooked shellfish, notes the Florida Department of Health. While most cases are mild, the infection can become serious and lead to limb amputation or death within days of encountering the flesh-eating bacteria. The name of the restaurant was not released. "Septicemia can be characterized by fever and chills, occasionally accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and pain in the extremities".

You can get the bacteria by eating undercooked shellfish.

"Infections are rare but exposures occur more commonly during the summer months from May to October, when the water is warmer", department officials said in an email reply.

Eating seafood or taking a swim in the water may seem like an essential summertime pastime, but you should be careful of the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus, which pops up more with the heat.

While Vibrio vulnificus is sometimes known as 'flesh-eating bacteria, ' the label is misleading because humans with healthy skin are not at risk. Nonetheless, it said that this is the first confirmed case and death of Vibrio vulnificus in Sarasota County this year.

Others who should avoid consuming raw shellfish are those with hemochromatosis (iron overload), diabetes, cancer, stomach disorders or any illness or treatment that weakens the immune system. It reported three cases with a single fatality in 2017, and two cases in 2016 — one of which leading to a death.

Suspected cases of Vibrio vulnificus need to be immediately treated with antibiotics to improve their survival.
