Arsenal's Mesut Ozil makes first public appearance since controversial Germany withdrawal

Are there too many ponytails on telly? Some think so. Black Sticks captain Stacey Michelsen in action against Germany

Ozil, who has Turkish roots, had been under fire since posing for a controversial photograph with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May which sparked questions about his loyalty to Germany's squad ahead of the tournament in Russian Federation. "The history here is one thing", he said.

Mesut Ozil photographed with Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May. "It is a personal decision from Mesut and I respect it".

"As a team we support him here, we try to make sure he feels good, so he can train and perform at his best".

"I want to help him and everybody in the club is thinking like me, to help him feel happy and to express his quality with us". We know the football [world] around us is about opinion and critique, we have a mentality and quality to work away from this opinion.

"We are expecting good matches against Paris St Germain and Atletico Madrid".

Ozil won't play against Atletico but could feature against PSG on Saturday.

Ozil made a decision to cut short his holiday to join up with his Arsenal team-mates in Singapore for pre-season and the former Real Madrid star is ready to put a turbulent summer behind him.

It had originally been unclear as to whether Ozil would join his team-mates for the start of the tour but following talks with his new manager last week, the German chose to cut his holiday short by three days and increase the intensity of his pre-season.

"We are like his home". He is very nice every day and training well with his team-mates.

Ozil also received support from the president of the Football Federation of Turkey, Yildirim Demiroren. Emery is keen to appoint five captains, which is a model followed by clubs including Barcelona in Spain, but is yet to announce his chosen leaders.

"I think that's a question for the manager, but as I said, he is one of the most experienced players and he is a world champion. They are great teams with great players, it's a test for us to get ready for the new season, so it's something to look forward to".
