Chris Wood surges up Open leaderboard

Chris Wood surges up Open leaderboard

Americans Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner share the lead on 9-under par heading into the final round of the British Open, with Tiger Woods four shots back in his bid for a first major title in 10 years. He didn't bogey a single hole, and scored two birdies, good enough to finish the tournament eight under par.

Kevin Chappell made two double bogeys, the last one on No. 17 that derailed his hopes.

Amid so much chaos - seven players atop the leaderboard, six of them still tied on the back nine - Molinari played a steady hand by going the entire weekend without a bogey and finishing with a 5-foot birdie putt that secured his place in history as Italy's first major champion.

"That putt on the last, I'll never forget", he said.

"I don't even know where I went", he said when asked whether he had just wandered into town in the downtime before his 4pm tee off.

Despite a spectacular surge, Woods' run at the trophy and his 15th major championship was spoiled by a double bogey on No. 11 and bogey on 12.

Justin Rose made his only birdie of the day when he needed it the most, sinking an 18-footer on the final hole to make the cut Friday in the British Open. Rose is No. 3 and almost joined them until he made an 18-foot birdie putt on the last hole to make the cut on the number. Very proud of - obviously, playing with Tiger was another challenge because of the crowds and everything.

It's also clear that Tiger believes he is back. Spieth went from a bogey-free round on Saturday that gave him a share of the lead to a birdie-free round that led to a 76, his highest Sunday score in a major.

The drama really ramped up a notch after Spieth and co-leader Xander Schauffele each bogeyed the fifth, leaving Woods within one.

"It's been a few years since I've felt like this", he said.

"It's just going to go in the memory bank as a positive. We're going to just keep trying to get after it".

Baldwin joins Johnson in writing Trump letter over tariffs
He said USDA's aid announcement on Tuesday makes him think the administration doesn't expect an end to trade disputes soon. Charles Grassley (R-IA) said the administration's move was "encouraging for the short term".

Tiger Woods is out on the course, making a par on the first hole. Still in range, he couldn't get close enough for a birdie when it mattered.

The 37-year-old equalled the record low round for a British Open at Carnoustie, and at four under par for the tournament he can dream realistically of achieving what he set out to do at the beginning of the week - becoming the first Englishman since Nick Faldo in 1992 to lift the Claret Jug.

His anger over his mistakes was tempered by perspective, comparing it to Serena Williams losing in the finals at Wimbledon.

England's Chris Wood took advantage of benign conditions to surge up the leaderboard in the early stages of day three of the 147th Open Championship. The good thing is there's not many players in between me and the lead. "So that was the goal to make sure I got in the clubhouse ahead of him". "I looked up, and I saw Tiger at number one and he was leading solo, and I went to (caddie) Michael (Greller), I was like, 'Dammit, I looked at the board, dude'".

It might sting even worse for Spieth. Instead, it floated out of the yellow grass to the right, bounced off the base of the rock wall that frames the winding stream and led to a double bogey. His best chance was at the 14th, where he three-putted for par from about 40 feet.

"Judging by the conditions and what's going to be going on, I would imagine it's going to be more of a grind all day", said Kisner, who has been sharing a house with Spieth and several other American stars in Scotland this week.

It capped off the best stretch of golf in his career.

Congrats to Molinari, who's been one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour; he's now won three of his last six starts.

This round wasn't flashy, and neither is Molinari.

By contrast, Molinari gained his first shot of the day at the par-five 14th and, just as crucially, holed clutch par putts on the 15th and 16th.

Thorbjornsen, from Wellesley, Massachusetts, birdied the par-4 30th hole - after his drive hit a tree and landed in the fairway - to square the match.
