Vettel sees hope in Hungary despite qualifying woe

Formula 1: Do Ferrari really have an advantage over Mercedes?

"I was pleasantly surprised how nice the auto was in the wet, because that definitely hasn't been our strongest point".

Hulkenberg did not run for the last half-hour after stopping out on track with an engine shutdown.

The scenario changed in a matter of seconds, and Vettel will start fourth behind Raikkonen.

"In Hungary it is hard to overtake so everything is going to depend on the start of the race", said team boss Toto Wolff.

As Ferrari became more cautious, Mercedes stepped it up. "We were lucky with the weather", said Mercedes' executive director, Toto Wolff. "The Ferraris were quicker all weekend, but the heavens opened and it was fair game".

For the second time in six days, the rain seemed to gift Lewis Hamilton an opportunity to use his skills to rescue a day that seemed otherwise to be getting away from him. "I think we had the speed today".

Although the Finnish driver regularly insists he is on an equal footing with Hamilton, the widely perceived view is that he is effectively No. 2.

The Briton has won five times previously at the Hungaroring, but never in a year in which he has gone on to take the championship. It is considered more favourable to cars with a strong downforce like Red Bull and Ferrari.

Referring to the Mercedes driver's alleged biblical conduct at the Hockenheim, Villeneuve said: "The way [Hamilton] knelt next to his auto after having his problem in qualifying looked like the suffering of Christ". "That is a great champion's ability".

Vettel, who had also been fastest on Friday, reported some debris in his auto at one point.

"It looks like in the wet conditions we aren't as confident as we are in the dry", said the German, whose team are mourning the death of former chairman Sergio Marchionne with flags flown at half mast.

"I think in the dry we were pretty much in control", said Vettel.

Ricciardo's Dutch Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen qualified only seventh, with Renault's Carlos Sainz and Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly fifth and sixth respectively.

Hamilton leads Vettel by 17 points in the drivers championship. Early into qualifying, Hamilton even feared his tires were "falling apart" but once again he proved himself to be the best in wet conditions.

The British driver complained on team radio about a lack of grip, having also been concerned with his tires.
