Yankees acquire All-Star lefty from Blue Jays to bolster rotation

The Hot Stove is Happ-ening

The acquisition of J.A. Happ from the Blue Jays certainly does that, but the Yankees had to give up real value to get the veteran southpaw. With his free agency scheduled for 2022, Drury could become a mainstay in the Blue Jays's lineup for many years. This is good news for the Yankees, who will likely slot Happ to pitch in those three series.

"We definitely satisfied some needs here", NY general manager Brian Cashman said.

Happ, who turns 36 in October, is 10-6 with a 4.18 ERA in 20 starts and was a first-time all-star, picking up the save for the American League at this year's midsummer classic in Washington, D.C. He joins a rotation that includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray. Despite setting career bests in strikeouts and ERA previous year, the right-hander struggled mightily earlier this season.

Drury was supposed to be the Yankees everyday third baseman, but he has dealt with various injuries throughout the season and lost his job to rookie Miguel Andujar.

The Yankees have been trying to add a starter since the offseason and they finally landed one. Soria, 34, was 0-3 with a 2.56 ERA and 16 saves in 40 relief appearances this season. A team can ask for whatever they want especially when they're in clear selling mode but in the end, the market dictates what teams need and are willing to give up.

With the July 31 trade deadline still a few days ago, more minor leaguers could potentially be on the move. And in his last 10 starts against the Red Sox dating back to 2015, he has posted a 1.78 ERA with a.202 opponent batting average. Despite that dip, Cashman said he saw "more upside". Shuttled back and forth between the majors and Triple-A after getting treatments that addressed the issue, Drury had played in just 10 games for the Yankees since. This is his fourth big league stint of the year. The Yankees have someone that will take the ball every fifth day and generally keep them in the game until the fifth or sixth inning, for a low cost in prospects and against the cap this season. "When I re-signed one of my goals was to win over the Blue Jays fans". The Yankees acquired McKinney from the Cubs in the trade that sent Aroldis Chapman to Chicago in 2016.

McKinney, 23, made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 2018, going 1-for-4 in two games before being placed on the disabled list for almost two months with a left shoulder sprain after colliding into the left field wall at Rogers Centre. He is hitting.230 with 13 homers and 35 RBIs in 62 games this year for Class A Tampa, Double-A Trenton and Scranton.
