Smoking ban in public housing: here’s what you need to know

NYC public housing buildings are now smoke-free

Smoking isn't allowed in many places and now not even in your home if living in public housing.

Smokers will still be able to rent units but will have to keep lit cigarettes, cigars and pipes at least 25 feet away from public housing and administrative office buildings.

NYCHA housing is becoming officially smoke-free based on a mandate from U.S. Housing and Urban Development, requiring all public housing to disallow smoking by July 30. In South Dakota, nearly 3000 people live in public housing, but the rule is nothing new in KOTA Territory. "But they won't stop, but they might stop smoking around here".

"Smoking in any area where it is not allowed will be treated as a lease violation", HUD's website states.

The American Lung Association in OH says the ruling will protect close to two million Americans nationwide from being exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes, including 690,000 children. "Them trying to tell you you can't smoke in your apartment or wherever", Tequita Brown said. The majority from heart disease. The new ban is expected to eliminate smoking in over 940,000 more units.

"It's to protect elderly - because there is elderly on oxygen - from secondhand smoke, staff from second hand smoke, children and families from second hand smoke, said Ince". To that effect, the encouragement will be underlined by stringent guidelines: Tenants could face eviction for violation of these rules - though first offenses will be forgiven.
