Ohio State says special, independent board formed in Urban Meyer investigation

Two Ohio State football helmets

Ohio State placed head football coach Urban Meyer on administrative leave Wednesday as the university investigates what Meyer knew about the domestic abuse allegations involving former assistant Zach Smith. The case was dropped by police when the woman chose not to pursue charges, but Hyde was suspended three games by Ohio State.

The day after Smith was sacked, Meyer was asked about the allegations during the Big Ten Conference Football Media Day.

Spurrier says he was always a head coach who had a zero-tolerance policy if one of his players (or coaches) physically assaulted a woman.

At issue is whether Meyer knew about domestic violence allegations against Zach Smith made by his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. Smith even provided McMurphy with a series of text messages between her and Meyer's wife, Shelley Meyer, in which Meyer offered support and promised to tell her husband about the violence.

The questions remains. When did Urban Meyer learn of the 2015 incident?

Zach Smith is the grandson of late Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, whom Meyer has long praised as a mentor and one of the most influential people in his life. Probably. But like it or not, the world was a different place at that time. That includes the incidents in 2009 and the alleged 2015 incident.

But morally, Meyer failed big-time.

In a statement posted to the university's website, Meyer confirmed he would be stepping aside while the probe is conducted, saying that he and Athletic Director Gene Smith had agreed "that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion".

The Ohio State University Board of Trustees today formed a special, independent board working group related to the investigation involving Urban Meyer that was announced on Wednesday.

It remains to be seen if the right thing was done in 2015.

He was sacked for lying about the fact he knew what his players were doing.

The crux of what investigators will be looking for is whether Meyer followed proper protocols when and if he received information about allegations regarding Smith. And if we was aware of the 2015 incident - and it appears he was. He said he and Shelley counseled the couple and allowed Zach Smith to remain on his staff.

Is a one-year suspension enough?

If the allegations against Meyer are true, the only option for Ohio State is to terminate his contract.

Add it all up, however, and Meyer's future in Columbus is more than murky.
