Mr Kelly told staffers that he had agreed to stay on, five White House officials said Tuesday.

The announcement coincided with the retired Marine Corps general's one year anniversary at the White House.

Though a White House spokesperson claimed at the time that Trump had given Kelly a formal job offer in advance, it was a lie.

Kelly, who hit his one-year mark in the White House on Monday, had been expected to step aside as early as this summer.

But Trump has made a decision to stick with Kelly - for now, at least.

However, the President applauded Kelly on Monday, tweeting a photo of the pair together.

About a year later, Kelly is nearly useless, having lost respect among staffers and exerting little control over Trump's impulsive agenda, decisions, and tweeting.

Kelly, who is said to have set a goal of lasting one year in the job, has been rumored to be on the way out of the White House.

The two strong-willed men clashed repeatedly, with semi-frequent Oval Office shouting matches and speculation that Kelly could quit.

Kelly has told allies that he feels it his duty to serve even if he and the president differ on style and messaging.

The Wall Street Journal first reported news of Kelly's plans.

Gabriel Sherman, who had previously documented Kelly's misery and ineffectiveness in some detail, has a theory that he's actually getting his revenge on Trump by sticking around, since POTUS wants him to quit but is reluctant to fire him. As a chief with no background in politics, he'll likely be responsible for running White House operations while Trump focuses on his re-election campaign. But he added: "Look, at some point, things happen but I will tell you. we have a very good relationship".
