Temperatures staying very high in red-hot Europe

A man walked along a path wearing a bandana as an improvised mask outside the village of Monchique in southern Portugal's Algarve region on Monday. Emergency services in Portugal say they are still fighting a major wildfire on the south coast that

Eight places in Portugal broke local temperature records, with the high peaking at 47 Celsius (116.6 Fahrenheit) in some places.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: "Record-breaking heat in Spain and Portugal is forecast to approach 50C".

Love Island might be over, but it looks like we're still in for a long, hot summer.

Several places in Portugal's parched southern Alentejo region were forecast to hit 47C. The government says only about 15 percent of the 10-year average area has been charred so far this year.

Francois Jobard, a forecaster for Meteo France, said the hot air mass from North Africa could cause temperatures in Portugal and Spain of 45C until Saturday and perhaps hotter.

Summer temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius are not unusual in southern parts of the Iberian peninsula.

Israel has killed seven Syrian fighters it believed were about to carry out an attack on the Golan Heights for Islamic State . The military described it as a "triangle area" near the borders of Israel, Syria and Jordan in the occupied Golan Heights.

And it looks set to get even worse, as some experts have said the highest temperature ever recorded in continental Europe (currently it is 48C set way back in Athens in 1977) could be topped this weekend.

Although holidaymakers might normally expect heat in the mid-30 degrees Celsius in these countries, there is the potential for extreme temperatures - edging towards 50 degrees Celsius.

A Europe-wide heatwave in recent weeks has seen drought and wildfires across the continent. The supermarket chain Morrisons has begun selling "wonky" flowers that have not developed properly.

"The South and East will be hottest and it will be a warm weekend for most, although cooler in the North".

Francisca Serrano, a souvenir seller, added "we are used to high temperatures, but it seems the air doesn't flow and that makes it hard to breathe".

A picture shows a parched section of the Wayoh Reservoir spanned by the Armsgrove Viaduct at Edgworth near Bolton, northwest England, on August 1, 2018, as dry and hot conditions were set to continue in much of Britain during a heatwave in Europe.

In another sign of drought, water levels in the Danube River in Budapest are about to fall to a level that will expose a small outcrop called Dearth Rock that is nearly always underwater, the National Water Management Authority said.
