11 killed and 59 people wounded after mass shootings in Chicago

31 shot, two killed in Sunday morning Chicago shootings

The Sunday shootings occurred between midnight and 2 p.m., records show. Just four days ago, a group of activists shut down Lake Shore Drive, one of Chicago's main thoroughfares, to protest the economic and racial inequality of gun violence - the city's ritzier, whiter neighborhoods rarely see murders - and call for Emanuel's resignation.

Police blamed much of the carnage on gangs, which run rampant in some of the city´s poorest and predominantly minority neighborhoods on the west and south sides.

The mayor said solving the city's violent crime problems is about more than reforms at the Chicago Police Department, or providing more jobs in the city.

Waller said numerous incidents were targeted, gang-related shootings, and in some cases, suspects were using larger summer crowds as cover. This year, the rate of gun killings has been decreasing; the Tribune reports that as of August 1, there were 1,700 fewer shootings in the city than in 2017.

"63 murders this weekend in Rahm Emmanuel's Chicago".

In one incident, around 12:40 a.m. Sunday, several gunmen opened fire on a group of people standing in the courtyard of a building, wounding eight people, police said.

"It is important to know that we at the FOP have tried to work with the attorney general of the state of IL, and they've refused to listen to us", Graham said during a press conference at the police union's headquarters.

Waller said the summer heat brings crowds out to the streets, particularly when violence has taken place.

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel and the city's police superintendent made an emotional plea for help in holding repeat gun offenders accountable after a deadly weekend in the IL city. "And there is a shortage of values of what is right and what is wrong", said Emanuel, a Democrat.

Resources at local hospitals were taxed as shooting victims poured in. At 6:50 a.m. Sunday, one man was killed and four others wounded in a shooting in the first block of North Leclaire Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood, police said.

In vowing to rehire as many as 400 retired police detectives if he is elected, Vallas also criticized the Emanuel administration for having "one of the worst clearance rates for homicides and other violent crimes among America's major cities".

Chicago experienced a near 20-year record number of murders in 2016, prompting President Donald Trump to regularly single out the city for criticism. "We together have to work as a city.we have a challenge and it requires all of us".
