Trump warned that those who don't wind down their economic ties to Iranian "risk severe consequences".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed Sunday that the United States would "enforce the sanctions" it is reimposing against Iran after President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear pact.

The Trump administration said it would restore sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear accord at midnight on Monday, ratcheting up pressure on Tehran while worsening a divide with Europe.

"Many countries, including Europeans, disagree with the USA sanctions and are willing to work with Iran", said the official, who asked not to be named.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini addresses a joint press conference before chairing a regular session of the International Donor Group for Palestine (Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC)) at the European Commission in Brussels on March 20, 2017.

A senior United States administration official said a move by Brussels, with the support of Britain, to impose a "blocking statute" protecting European businesses trading with Iran was "not something that we're particularly concerned by".

The currency's collapse and soaring inflation have sparked sporadic demonstrations in Iran against profiteering and corruption, with many protesters chanting anti-government slogans.

"If they (sanctions) are applied, then that person can go to the court to recover that damage".

"We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the U.S.", the bloc said in a joint statement with the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Britain.

Iranian forces might decrease its presence in Syria and even cease it after the situation in the war-torn country normalizes and the fight against terrorism there brings significant results, Iranian Foreign Ministry's spokesman Bahram Qassemi said. The Trump administration has said that the curbs did not go far enough and it wants to renegotiate with Iran.

In his statement, President Trump took a shot at European countries dedicated to allowing business with Iran to continue as part of the nuclear agreement.

Iran's economy is tanking for a number of reasons. This includes the sanctions that are expected to carry more weight - including bans on doing business with Iran's Central Bank and accepting the country's crude oil exports.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the renewed sanctions against Iran are an important pillar in USA policy toward the Tehran government.

"We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the U.S., due to the latter's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)", the union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, and the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany said in a joint statement, using the nuclear deal's technical name.

"We are happy to talk if there's an arrangement that is appropriate, that could lead to a good outcome", he said.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a televised speech on Monday that the United States had launched "psychological warfare" against Iran in the aftermath of its withdrawal from a 2015 nuclear deal.

The August sanctions will be followed by a second set of measures in November, which will impact Iran's oil and energy sectors, financial institutions, port operations, shipping and shipbuilding, and the insurance industry. "I am pleased that many global firms have already announced their intent to leave the Iranian market, and several countries have indicated that they will reduce or end imports of Iranian crude oil".
