Measles Outbreak In 21 States: Symptoms, Vaccination Effectiveness

CDC monitoring measles outbreak in 21 states including Michigan

According to the Center for control and prevention of diseases (Centers for Dicease Control and Prevention - CDC), already 107 patients from 21 States, including new Jersey, NY and CT, have addressed in medical institutions with suspected measles.

According to the CDC, there have already been 107 measles cases reported this year.

At its current pace, the 2018 measles outbreak could be the worst since 2014 when there were a reported 667 cases.

The majority of people who got measles were unvaccinated, according to the CDC.

Measles can spread when it reaches a community in the US where groups of people are unvaccinated.

In 2015, a large measles outbreak was linked to visitors to Disneyland.

Symptoms of the virus show up in 10 to 14 days and last seven to 10 days.

Measles is a highly contagious, acute respiratory illness spread by air droplets. In all of 2017, for example, 118 people from 15 states and DC had measles. Measles is designated as notifiable at the national level under the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, meaning all cases must be reported to the CDC. "MMR vaccine provides long-lasting protection against all strains of measles", the CDC official said. People with the disease can remain contagious for up to four days.

The Florida Department of Health said Monday it is investigating a case of measles in an unvaccinated child in Pinellas County. MMR vaccine is one of the required school immunizations in Indiana.

In new Jersey reports about the threat of Contracting measles were reported in may of this year. Vaccination is now the only effective way to prevent measles.
