Shots fired at gate of U.S. Embassy in Turkey

Shots were fired at a security booth outside the US Embassy in Turkey's capital Ankara

It said one bullet hit a window but no one was hurt, and police were searching for the auto and suspects.

The suspects are being interrogated at a police station in Ankara.

Meanwhile, the Turkish foreign ministry said measures were taken to "ensure the security of the USA embassy in Ankara, other United States missions and their personnel" across the country.

Ankara Governor's Office named the suspects as Ahmet Celikten and Osman Gundas; the 9mm pistol and vehicle used in the shooting incident were also seized.

The attack coincided with a deepening row between Ankara and Washington over the trial of a USA pastor in Turkey.

No one was hurt in the attack, which took place on the eve of the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha.

Brunson was indicted by a Turkish court on charges of having links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant group and the movement of the US-based opposition cleric Fethullah Gulen. This is a clear attempt to create chaos.

Omer Celik, a spokesman for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), called the incident an "open provocation", but did not elaborate.

"Turkey is a safe country and all foreign missions remain safe under the law".

Ties between Ankara and Washington have been strained over the case of an imprisoned American pastor, leading the USA to impose sanctions and increased tariffs that sent the Turkish lira tumbling last week. Gulen denies those allegations.

The Turkish lira has lost 39 percent of its value against the US dollar since the beginning of the year and was hurt further by recent USA tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum. Turkey's economy is already vulnerable because of heavy foreign currency borrowing that fueled high growth for years.

Also Monday, Turkey filed a complaint about the US tariffs at the World Trade Organization, the WTO said.

The diplomatic stand-off sent the Turkish currency into free fall against dollar, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowing to emerge victorious out of the crisis.

"There is no difference between the direct attacks on our call to prayer and our flag and the attack on our economy", said Erdogan.

USA diplomatic offices have been targeted in the past in Turkey, where various armed groups are active.

The US mission in Ankara and its staff have been targeted in the past, most recently in 2013, when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the embassy, killing a guard and seriously wounding respected Turkish TV journalist Didem Tuncay, who lost her right eye.

Turkish police detained one suspect in connection with the attack, the state-run Anadolu news agency, without providing any details.
