Australian PM Turnbull fights leadership challenge

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will have to watch his back after Peter Dutton announced he is working on

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says he plans to hold a party meeting on Friday if a majority of his ruling conservative Liberal Party lawmakers want it.

"I am a creature of the Liberal Party".

The Prime Minister yesterday said if the motion for a spill succeeded, he would resign, and quit parliament, putting the government's one-seat majority in danger.

Sales pointed out that the polls suggested she'd be their only chance at survival.

"Out of respect for my party, I spoke with the deputy PM and my colleagues", he said. I've got a job.

Turnbull's main rival in his government, former Cabinet minister Peter Dutton, has told the prime minister that a majority of Liberal Party lawmakers - at least 43 - don't support his leadership.

News.com.au has contacted the Foreign Minister's office for comment.

They have all tendered their resignations from the frontbench.

If it does go ahead tomorrow, Ms Bishop and Mr Morrison are expected to contest the leadership ballot in a three-way fight with Mr Dutton.

"Accordingly, I asked him to convene a party room meeting at which I would challenge for the leadership of the parliamentary Liberal Party".

Mr Cosgrove is British Queen Elizabeth's representative in Australia and would need to be on hand to swear in a new prime minister if Mr Turnbull was ousted, or to accept Mr Turnbull's request to dissolve Parliament if he decides to call an early election.

"A minority in the party room, supported by others outside the parliament, have sought to bully, intimidate others into making this change of leadership that they're seeking".

He said a "form of madness" had taken over those agitating for a leadership change.

In a key development on Thursday, cabinet ministers Mathias Cormann, Mitch Fifield and Michaelia Cash told reporters that they had withdrawn their support for Mr Turnbull.

He declined to endorse a successor amid reports Treasurer Scott Morrison will also seek the leadership in the event of a ballot.

Mr Hogan said he believed the Australian people have had enough of the poor behaviour of senior politicians treating their positions and the community with disrespect. I have never done that.

"I do not recognise the values, I do not recognise the bullying and intimidation that has gone on", she told ABC.

Before the meeting, the Solicitor-General on Friday will provide an opinion on the constitutional eligibility to sit in parliament of challenger Peter Dutton.

"In the case of Mr Dutton, I think he'll have to establish that he is eligible to sit in the Parliament".

When asked what he would do if his actions of moving to the crossbench led to a hung parliament, Mr Hogan said he would continue to vote for the Coalition on money matters. "Are they validly a minister at all?"

Turnbull ousted his predecessor, Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a Dutton ally, in the same way nearly three years ago.

Dutton has an interest, through a family trust, in two child care centres which receive subsidies through government programs.

If he became prime minister, Dutton said he would focus on lowering electricity prices, cutting immigration to ease population pressures and boost water investment to help drought-stricken farmers.
