GOP Congressman, Wife Indicted on Campaign Finance Violations

GOP Congressman, Wife Indicted on Campaign Finance Violations

While the blistering 47-page indictment, filed Tuesday, has bolstered Democrats' hopes of ousting Hunter, California's 50th Congressional District has always been a deep-red holdout in a staunchly blue state - President Donald Trump won the district by a 15-point margin - and Hunter remains the favorite to win in November.

Hunter and his wife, Margaret, entered federal court in San Diego separately with their own attorneys to enter their pleas and both also left separately.

Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe joked that Hunter now has a "lot bigger things" to fear than the indictment now that he crossed his wife.

"Elected representatives should jealously guard the public's trust, not abuse their positions for personal gain", U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said in a statement.

Ammar Campa-Najjar has briefly responded to Fox News' headline highlighting how he is the grandson of a terrorist directly involved in the 1972 Munich massacre. He sits on the House Armed Services Committee among others. "I intend to fight them fully". "That's how people get to hear me and hear what I have to say, and they donate money". "I didn't use campaign money, especially for Wounded Warriors, there's no way".

Campa-Najjar said his motivation for running is personal.

"We're excited", Campa-Najjar said in an interview with The Associated Press. He needs to be witched out of Washington, and we need to put in people that we trust. Duncan Hunter was released on $15,000 bail and Margaret Turner on $10,000 bail.

"The charges against me are politically motivated and without merit", Hunter said in a letter to Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan that was forwarded to Reuters after the hearing.

Pope expresses shame at church's failure to address 'repellent' abuse crimes
Ireland is "the ground zero of Catholic clerical sex abuse", Irish journalist Paddy Agnew told NPR . The pope was expected to meet with Irish victims of sexual abuse later in the day.

MacCullum suggested that the couple have an agreement for Martha Hunter to "take the heat".

There is no doubt a win would be an upset even with the allegations against Hunter and his wife. "Using your power and being in a position to blame your subordinates, I think, is a symptom of toxic masculinity".

The indictment added that Hunter had hired on his wife as campaign manager "despite the protests of his treasurer and with full knowledge of her long history of misuse of campaign funds in part because, as they discussed, the Hunters "needed the extra money" that would come from her salary". Hunter, along with his wife, are accused of misspending more than a quarter of a million dollars for personal reasons including travel, video games, and rounds of tequila shots.

The alleged expenditures are eclectic, ranging from $6,150 spent on private school tuition at Christian Unified Schools to an assortment of outlays on tobacco, alcohol, fine dining and fast food.

It was the attention, Campa-Najjar said, that his campaign deserved.

Campa-Najjar said he was hopeful of breaking the Hunter family's almost 40-year hold on the district that runs largely east of coastal San Diego, abutting Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base and stretching to a remote section of U.S. -Mexico border.

In a televised interview Wednesday, Hunter, 41, said he's not anxious about the indictment and is eager to go to trial.

Hunter's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
