MA: State Raises West Nile Virus Risk Level

The Oregon State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab reported yesterday that 11 additional samples from mosquitoes collected last week have tested positive.

Chris Boling, the county's environmental health specialist, said he was informed by State Entomologist Bryan Price that a sample of mosquitoes taken August 10 tested positive for the disease.

Interior Health says it's the first evidence of West Nile virus activity in British Columbia this year. The West Umatilla Mosquito Control District reported that the virus was initially detected in the Cold Springs area on June 19th, but has recently spread throughout the district.

There have also been cases of mosquitos spreading the virus to horses and other animals, so horse owners are encouraged to contact their veterinarians for informations about equine vaccines. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers when in mosquito infested areas. Utilize screen doors and windows. According to the county health department, one of the most effective ways to keep mosquitos from around your home is to practice what's called "tip and toss".

Smoky skies, poor air from wildfires return to Northwest
For comparison, Beijing and Mumbai - two cities renowned for typically poor air quality - scored 47 and 50 respectively. Another notable fire, the 633-hectare Gottfriedsen Mountain fire, was brought under control on Sunday .

Most people bitten by an infected mosquito will have no symptoms, while about 20 percent develop a mild flu-like illness.

The chances of a person contracting WNV are low and most people infected with West Nile virus will not have any symptoms. "And it's the major problem with West Nile", he added.

Mosquitoes are most active at duck and dawn, so take extra protection during those times- wearing long sleeves and trousers if possible. Individuals with severe or unusual headaches should seek medical care as soon as possible.
