Manafort juror says 1 holdout prevented 18-count conviction

The jury returned the decision after deliberating four days on tax and bank fraud charges against Manafort, who led Trump's election effort during a crucial stretch of 2016, including as he clinched the Republican nomination and during the party's convention.

That included three of the counts accusing him of failing to report foreign bank accounts in years 2011, 2013 and 2014. The judge declared a mistrial on 10 other counts after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict.

Manafort's defense attorneys and the government's lawyers shook hands solemnly.

Juror 0302 had a long drive to the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Va., for the Paul Manafort trial, and any glimpse in the rearview mirror could have caught her eye to the red hat on the back seat, emblazoned with the phrase "Make America Great Again". The president responded to the cases on Twitter this morning, accusing Cohen of making up stories for a plea deal and calling Manafort a fearless man. NPR's national justice correspondent Carrie Johnson is with us to talk through the Manafort verdict and what comes next from that. If so, he would have a third trial, and prosecutors would have to present much of the same case all over again.

She said she understood that Manafort is presumed innocent. "And so what Paul Manafort is looking for is a walk-away deal, someone that will give him a chance to walk away without further jail time".

Over two weeks of testimony, more than two dozen witnesses, including his former right-hand man Rick Gates, as well as his former bookkeeper and accountants, testified against Manafort. "The president thinks Manafort's biggest crime was running the Trump campaign".

Michael Cohen pleaded guilty in NY to eight felony counts of tax evasion, bank fraud and, most ominously for President Donald Trump, campaign finance violations.

Manafort was convicted on financial charges Tuesday while that same day Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations and implicated Trump. This is after the jury was unable to come to a consensus on those counts. After nearly four days of deliberations, a 12-member jury found Manafort guilty on two counts of bank fraud, five counts of tax fraud and one charge of failing to disclose foreign bank accounts.

The verdict announced Tuesday comes as President Trump has stepped up his criticism of Mueller's probe, publicly criticizing the investigation on a weekly basis.

Roger Federer admits that he’s anxious despite training hard ahead of Cincinnati
Kvitova had to dig deep to prevail against Williams, the Czech winning 6-3 2-6 6-3 after two hours on the outdoor hard courts. Kvitova out-aced Serena eight to seven, and snapped Serena's streak of 11 match wins in a row in Cincinnati .

"Legally he's entitled to pardon Manafort", said Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard professor that Trump likes to watch on TV.

Just 11 percent of the 1,564 registered voters polled said it would be appropriate to pardon Manafort, and only 9 percent find a pardon for Cohen appropriate, according to the poll released Friday.

A spokesman for the special counsel's office and a spokesman for Manafort did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Manafort stood in a well-worn dark suit and powder-blue tie, staring at the jury as the clerk read off the counts finding him guilty.

"The president's campaign [chairman] was just convicted of serious federal crimes by a jury of his peers, despite the president's continued attempts to undermine the investigation which has brought Mr. Manafort to justice".

Manafort, 69, called no witnesses at all, as his lawyer argued prosecutors had failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he meant to defraud the government or banks. Manafort's lawyers repeatedly suggested their client might not have known the law.

The case against Manafort stemmed from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference and possible collusion between the Trump campaign team and Moscow, and is viewed as an important test for the probe. "For 30, 40 years I've been watching flippers".

It also isn't the end of his legal jeopardy.

He still faces a second set of criminal charges in a Washington, DC, federal court, of failure to register his foreign lobbying and of money laundering conspiracy related to the same Ukrainian political work that was central to the Virginia case.
