Australia: Scott Morrison to replace ousted Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister

Second challenge looms for Malcolm Turnbull as Peter Dutton reveals policy plans

Turnbull only held a one-seat majority in the lower house, and should his party lose the upcoming by-election, it would force Australia into a fresh general election, which polling suggests the opposition Labor Party is likely to win.

Australia Treasurer Scott Morrison will be Australia's new prime minister after winning a three-way battle for the leadership of the Liberal party on Friday (Aug 24).

There were three contenders in the leadership vote: former home affairs minister Peter Dutton, who narrowly lost a leadership vote against Turnbull on Tuesday, Morrison and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

The Liberal party is the senior partner in the ruling conservative coalition that will face an election by May 2019. "I'm sorry. You deserve better than numerous things our Federal Parliament has served up to you for the past 10 years", wrote Nationals MP Darren Chester, whose party is in a coalition with the Liberals.

The former treasurer, a Turnbull ally who upset right-wing challenger Peter Dutton in the internal party ballot, said he had had a warm chat with the USA president.

Morrison, an ally of deposed leader Malcolm Turnbull, won an internal party ballot 45-40.

"In the case of Mr Dutton, I think he'll have to establish that he is eligible to sit in the Parliament".

"We can't support a policy that has been written by the coal, oil and gas lobby", he said.

Josh Frydenberg, the environment and energy minister, was selected as deputy Liberal leader.

"It's been described by many people, including those who feel they can not resist it as a form of madness", he said. He did not contest the vote on Friday.

USA heaps more sanctions on top of Russian Federation
President Donald Trump as positive, but blamed Trump's administration for continuing to hit Russian Federation with sanctions. Speaking after talks with Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto in Sochi, Putin described last month's Helsinki summit with U.S.

But the bigger task is for Australia's leaders to rise above partisan ends to address humanity's gravest challenge of global warming.

He voted no in Australia's plebiscite on same-sex marriage, listed "church" as one of his interests in his Who's Who profile, and regards former prime minister John Howard as a political inspiration. "He won this vote 45-40 against Peter Dutton".

"It was extraordinary", Mr Turnbull said.

"I have just been provided with a request for a meeting of the Parliamentary Liberal Party", Turnbull tweeted a short time ago.

"The prime minister has my full and total support, and I want to put to rest any suggestion I've made an approach", he said.

Born in Sydney in 1968, Mr Morrison has been Australia's Treasurer - the equivalent of the UK's Chancellor - since September 2015.

Dutton, who Turnbull accused of bullying and intimidation in the move to knife him, pledged "absolute loyalty" to Morrison.

"Over the next four years, the GST pool is going to grow by $6.5 billion specifically because of the decisions we have taken as a government".

Australian media reported on Thursday that Treasurer Scott Morrison and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop would contest the top job if the spill motion is passed.

"There was a determined insurgency from a number of people both in the party room and backed by voices, powerful voices, in the media", he told reporters in reference to media mogul Rupert Murdoch's conservative News Corporation.
