Famed American playwright Neil Simon has died at age 91.

Overall he won one Pulitzer Prize, a Golden Globe and three Tonys.

Over the course of a prolific career that included more than 30 plays - including hits "The Odd Couple" and "Barefoot in the Park" - and multiple accolades, Simon drew on the sometimes-unexpected comedy lurking in the lives of middle-class Americans, inspiring laughs of recognition from vast audiences. He will be long remembered for setting a new tone in theatrical comedy, and was a pioneer of the stage and screen. And it won Simon another Tony for best play in 1985. "By any measure-quantity, quality, popular success, renown-Neil Simon is the preeminent purveyor of comedy in the last half of the twentieth century", Paris Review wrote.

Hollywood and Broadway actor Matthew Broderick says he owes his career to playwright Neil Simon. Along with his Oscar nominations and his Tony wins, Simon also won the Mark Twain Prize for Comedy in 2006 and took home Kennedy Center Honors in 1995. Moving from there to Caesar's Hour, Simon also write more than a dozen episodes of Sgt. Bilko for Phil Silvers.

Some of Simon's most iconic shows, such as the "The Odd Couple", began running in he mid-1960s.

"Neil has the ability to write characters, even the leading characters that we're supposed to root for, that are absolutely flawed. They are not all bad or all good; they are people we know". There, he worked for the Army newspaper as a sports editor.

Simon attended New York University and the University of Colorado.

Australian PM Turnbull fights leadership challenge
He declined to endorse a successor amid reports Treasurer Scott Morrison will also seek the leadership in the event of a ballot. Dutton has an interest, through a family trust, in two child care centres which receive subsidies through government programs.

"Barefoot in the Park" turned Robert Redford into a star.

The bespectacled, mild-looking Simon - described in a New York Times magazine profile as looking like an accountant or librarian who dressed "just this side of drab" - was a relentless writer and rewriter.

Add in his original screenplays - such as "The Out-of-Towners", "The Heartbreak Kid", "The Goodbye Girl" and "Seems Like Old Times" - and one can get a sense of Simon's dominance.

NEW YORK (AP) - The playwright behind such comedic hits such as "The Odd Couple" and "Plaza Suite", has died. Then came Lost in Yonkers in 1991, which starred Kevin Spacey.

In 2012, Northlight meant to stage a high-profile revival of "The Odd Couple" with Tim Kazurinsky and George Wendt; in the end, the actor Marc Grapey, who had understudied Lane and Broderick on Broadway in a revival of the same show, went on for the ailing Wendt.
