Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop resigns from Cabinet

Morrison, the former treasurer (finance minister), was sworn in as prime minister on Friday after winning a Liberal Party leadership challenge against incumbent moderate Malcolm Turnbull.

"I will be resigning from my cabinet position as Minister for Foreign Affairs", Bishop said in a statement, signalling her intention to remain on the backbench.

She was one of the great survivors of Australian politics who served under three different liberal leaders since 2007.

"Today I informed the Prime Minister that quit from his post of Minister of foreign Affairs".

His party will already have to contest a by-election for Turnbull's harbourside electorate in Sydney, traditionally a safe Liberal seat. "She has been and remains an inspiring role model for women here and around the world".

Education Minister Simon Birmingham earlier on Sunday said Ms Bishop was "the most significant woman in the history of the Liberal Party" and deserved to make a decision about her future without external pressure.

While Prime Minister Scott Morrison has now put together a cabinet that papers over the most drafty cracks in the Coalition, the harder task ahead is to put together some policies.

She had been foreign minister since 2013 and was replaced by former defence minister Marise Payne in the new Cabinet line-up announced by Morrison after Bishop resigned.

She undoubtedly played a key role in healing the damage caused to relations with Indonesia by Labor's live cattle export policy, turning back boats and the Indonesian president phone tapping scandal.

Morrison, who last week was the treasurer, returned Dutton to the home affairs ministry he had held under Turnbull.

Mr Abbott was last week accused of being a "wrecker" by fellow Liberal MPs for laying the groundwork for the sudden move by the party's conservative wing against Mr Turnbull.

"I'll be leaving the Parliament ... not before too long", Mr Turnbull said last Friday in his final media conference as prime minister.

"We can all fix bridges - me included - and [Morrison's] words to me were "it's a fair dinkum job Ray, it's not a pretend job", Hadley said.
