John McCain dies at 81 after battle with brain cancer

John McCain is greeted by President Richard Nixon after his release from a prisoner of war camp in North Vietnam.

"I've known great passions, seen unbelievable wonders, fought in a war and helped make peace. I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times".

During a 38 year marriage to his second wife Cindy, he fathered two sons and one daughter, Meghan McCain, now a political pundit featured on the ABC daytime show, The View.

"I am more energetic and more engaged as a result of this because I know that I've got to do everything I can to serve this country while I can", McCain said in September during an interview with "60 Minutes".

In 2008, McCain was invited to participate in the 31st anniversary dinner for Chabad of Arizona, directed by Rabbi Zalman and Tzipi Levertov.

McCain "meant so much to so many of us", inside the Senate and out, McConnell said, adding: "The Senate is eager to work on concrete ways to continue this momentum and provide a lasting tribute to this American hero long after this week's observances are complete".

McCainwas diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2017 and had been undergoing medical treatment.

John McCain's death, President Donald Trump says he respects the senator's "service to our country" and has signed a proclamation to fly the US flag at half-staff until his burial.

The vacancy created by McCain's death narrows the number of Republican-held seats in the 100-member U.S. Senate to 50, with Democrats controlling 49.

McCain was seen as a maverick in his campaign for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination when he gave then-Texas Governor George W. Bush a scare by decisively winning the first of the state nominating contests. John McCain following the death of his 2008 presidential rival. The president, who mocked McCain's capture in Vietnam during the 2016 campaign, jabbed at the senator even after his illness for voting against Republican efforts to roll back President Barack Obama's health care law. But we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher - the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched and sacrificed.

Mr McCain said he would rather write in the name of a conservative Republican "who's qualified to be president". Only seven senators are honored with portraits there.

In his home state of Arizona, McCain regularly interacted with Chabad Shluchim and supported activities of American Friends of Lubavitch in Washington, DC, such as Education and Sharing Day USA that is annually proclaimed on the 11th of Nissan, the birthday of the Rebbe. "It is my hope that we will come together as a nation and honor his legacy". "With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family", his office said in a statement.

Cayetano noted that the Filipinos will remember the US senator from Arizona for translating America's commitment into action and for playing a vital role in keeping the Philippines-US alliance "strong and capable to address current strategic challenges". In his public service and work with private organizations, he championed the men and women of the USA military who carry out this vital mission.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell devoted his entire opening remarks Monday afternoon to McCain.

The US delegation included US Senators Joseph Liberman, Sheldon Whitehous, and Kelly Ayotte. The two had a long-running feud.

While in Manila, McCain's delegation also sought an update from former DFA Undersecretary Rafael Seguis concerning the Government of the Philippines - Moro Islamic Liberation Front (GRP-MILF) Peace Process.

Trump and McCain had a bitter relationship that lasted through McCain's final days.
