Gerard Depardieu Accused of Rape, His Lawyer Denies Allegation

Gerard Depardieu

Depardieu's lawyer Herve Temime said on France's BFM TV that the actor "absolutely denies any rape, any sexual assault, any crime".

Depardieu's lawyer Hervé Témime confirmed that a complaint against his client had been filed, but said the actor "absolutely denies having committed the slightest offense" against anyone.

The probe follows a complaint lodged on Monday in southern Provence, according to a judicial source.

Depardieu has had a prolific acting career, including over 170 film titles.

Depardieu, 69, is known as a larger-than-life character with a life-long penchant for making headlines.

One of France's most prolific actors, Depardieu, 69, has been in about 170 movies through his career and gained global recognition in 1990 with his starring role in English-language comedy Green Card.

The accusations against him are the latest in a string made against prominent men in the wake of the rape and assault claims against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein and the Me Too movement that they gave rise to. He added: "I regret the public nature of this procedure which is causing serious damage to Gérard Depardieu". He has more than 200 credits to his name and recently starred in Netflix's French political series Marseille.

Gerard Depardieu is being accused of allegedly raping an actress, 22. Not only that, but Russian President Vladimir Putin invited him to dinner where he personally presented the actor with his Russian citizenship.
