Nick Kyrgios triumphes over Herbert after umpire controversy

Kyrgios triumphs over Herbert after umpire controversy

The trials and tribulations of Nick Kyrgios took another turn at the US Open as he moved into the third round but only after freakish intervention from the chair umpire.

Kyrgios was trailing by a set and 3-0 in the second set, when Lahyani left his chair to beg the Australian to start trying for the sake of the paying crowd and to avoid being sanctioned for not trying.

At which point Lahyani came down from his chair, an unusual move, apparently to urge Kyrgios to show more effort, and could be heard telling him: "I want to help you".

"It's not the umpire's role to go down from the chair".

"He was just concerned with the way I was playing", said Kyrgios after the match which he won 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 6-0, pocketing 19 of the last 25 games following Lahyani's intervention.

Kyrgios twice bit back on Twitter at fellow player Donna Vekic for questioning Lahyani's conduct but deleted both messages and later apologised. I umpired thousands of matches.

"I think he finds it hard to not do any of those tricks", Federer said on ESPN after his own first round victory.

Herbert was not happy later, saying: 'I don't think he has to go down and take the position of a coach like you can see on the WTA Tour. "You are great for tennis". The only thing he can tell him is, "pay attention because if you continue like this I'm going to give you a warning', something like this".

It didn't help me at all.

"I'm doing a lot of stuff different". He should not go down off his chair and reason with Nick.

Kyrgios has been forced to undergo work with sports psychologists in the past by the ATP in light of him openly tanking matches, and there had been occasions in this match before the pep talk when he was not even moving to return serves.

"He (Layhani) came out of his chair because of the noise levels at the stadium to make sure he could communicate effectively with Kyrgios". I didn't listen to what they said.

Kyrgios hauled himself back into the contest after Lahyani's approach, having looked utterly disinterested in the early stages.

The Frenchman said: "On court I tried to focus on myself".

"First of all, I'm upset against me because I should have finished the second set".
