[H]ardOCP: Air Leak Found in International Space Station

Soyuz craft

The six crew members on board the International Space Station awoke to some news you never want to hear when you're hurtling through space at almost 30,000 km/h - while they slept, NASA controllers on the ground had detected a small leak in part of the station, as air slowly vented into space.

Russian officials said the pressure was detected on August 29 and is believed to be in the Soyuz capsule docked at the space station.

NASA and Roscosmos said that the team then performed tests and troubleshooting to figure out exactly where the leak originated from.

The hole was detected earlier in the week as it had caused a small drop in cabin pressure.

NASA said "the leak has been isolated to a hole about 2 millimeters in diameter".

The leak was found at about 7 p.m. ET Wednesday by flight controllers in Houston and Moscow.

Nasa confirmed the tear had led to a "minute pressure leak" and that the crew were containing the issue.

Flight controllers determined there was no immediate danger to the crew overnight. With the assistance of ground control, the crew combed through the ISS, closing off modules one at a time.

In this June 24, 2018 photo released by NASA, the Russian Soyuz MS-09 crew craft, left, and the Northrop Grumman (formerly Orbital ATK) Cygnus space freighter are attached to the International Space Station. Roscosmos' Soyuz commander Sergey Prokopyev repaired the leak using epoxy placed on a gauze wipe.

After the hole had been taped up, crewmembers put sealant on a cloth and stuck it over the area.

The crew's makeshift repairs to the leak seemingly have stabilised the situation - for now at least - it's been reported by officials.

"As flight controllers monitored their data, the decision was made to allow the Expedition 56 crew to sleep since they were in no danger", NASA said in a statement.

Apart from those two, collisions with other spacecraft during docking, fires aboard the station, and toxic spills are some of the more unsafe things looming over ISS astronauts.
