Tua Tagovailoa shines as top-ranked Alabama cruises to win over Louisville

Most importantly, Tua Tagovailoa looked spectacular and every part the Crimson Tide's top QB. His Alabama opened yet another season with national title plans by plastering Louisville 51-14.

Nick Saban doesn't understand why everyone is so interested in the Alabama quarterback battle.

After months of anticipation, the talented sophomore quarterback earned his first career start at Alabama when he took the field against Louisville during the Camping World Kickoff Saturday at Camping World Stadium.

"I talked to the quarterbacks before practice on Thursday and they both knew exactly what the situation was going to be in the game", Saban said. "I think both guys are good players, I think both guys can help our team", Saban said. "But I also think it's pretty obvious we need to do a lot of things better". After a 25-yard return, Alabama was inside Louisville's 10-yard line three plays later, thanks largely to a 49-yard rainbow from Tagovailoa to true freshman Jaylen Waddle.

It was an awkward scene, with Taylor replying "I hear you", then moving on to another question about Saban's offense.

Louisville is replacing a Heisman Trophy victor Lamar Jackson, while Alabama has two elite quarterbacks who have been competing for the starting job since Tua Tagovailoa replaced Jalen Hurts in the national championship game against Georgia and led the Tide to a comeback overtime win.

Petrino, meanwhile, is 0-5 vs. Alabama.

Louisville finally got on the board at the 6:27 mark of the third quarter when Jawon Pass found tight end Kemari Averett for a 12-yard touchdown pass, but the Cardinals never seriously threatened the Tide.

"Tua played well and made some really good throws - I mean, really good throws, very accurate throws, put the ball right on guys", Saban said of his new starting quarterback.
