Huawei announces Kirin 980 SoC with next gen AI engine onboard

Huawei Kirin 980 is the World’s First Commercial 7nm Chipset, To Power Mate 20 Series and Honor Magic 2

Just like the original Kirin 970 SoC, the Kirin 980 also comes with a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) to enhance the Ai capabilities of the smartphone, that beholds the Kirin 980. It is also the world's first mobile SoC to feature a Cortex-A76 based CPU, Dual-NPU, Mali-G76 GPU, 1.4 Gbps Cat.21 modem, and support for 2133 MHz LPDDR4X memory. The Huawei P20 starts at 649 EUR (Rs.53,600 approx.) for the 4GB RAM + 128GB storage variant, while the P20 Pro starts at 899 EUR (Rs.74,200 approx.) for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. The GPU comes with clock boosting technology that will adjust the resource allocation depending on the requirement of an app or a game.

The Kirin 980 is also the first in the world to feature the Mali-G76 GPU. This performs AI assisted image recognition tasks at a rate of 4500 images per minute, according to Huawei. The smaller process allows the chipset to cram 6.9 billion transistors into it. Huawei claims that its new 7nm-process chipset helps delivers 20% improved SoC performance and 40% efficiency.

In the Kirin 980 the CPU architecture works in the same way, but instead of simply fast and slow cores, there are three types of CPU core on the chip: two high-power 2.6GHz cores; two middle performance cores running at 1.92GHz; and four lightweight cores running at 1.8GHz for what Huawei calls "extreme power efficiency".

There's also fair bit of focus on improving the photography experience. The Huawei Mate 20 is set to be the first device to feature it due on 16 October 2018 in London. It will be exciting to see how many of Huawei's claims come true after the launch of the Kirin 980.

And, the Honor Magic 2, which was teased recently on Twitter with the sliding camera feature, is also expected to be powered by the Kirin 980 SoC. Additionally, the Kirin 980 supports carrier aggregation, even across frequency bands, so users are free to choose their mobile operators and still enjoy the same premium connectivity experience, regardless of where they are. While the company did not announce new smartphone, it did confirm the launch date of the Mate 20 series and introduced a few new color options for its existing flagship smartphones - P20 and P20 Pro. The Morpho Aurora was inspired by the Morpho butterfly, while the Pearl White exudes the same elegance as the iridescent mother-of-pearl.
