Body of second person killed in Colorado River collision found

A recreational boat

According to MCSO, a Hallett Boat carrying 10 people and Sleek Craft with six people aboard crashed head-on between Pirates Cove and the Topock Marina.

Christine Lewis, 51, of Visalia, California, was discovered in a section of the river along the California-Arizona border on Monday.

After the crash, both boats sank as passing boaters pulled crash victims from the water.

Two people were critically injured in the crash and flown to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, officials said.

Sheriff Doug Schuster of the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said that none of the 16 boaters involved in the crash were wearing life vests, which are not required by law. Six other people suffered moderate, non-life threatening injuries and six more had injuries considered minor, the fire district said.

Nine people were transported to area hospitals by ambulance.

Dozens of divers from multiple agencies have assisted in the search which, over the past two days, has covered a roughly 5-mile-long stretch of the river, from Park Moabi Channel to Topock Gorge.

Search efforts resumed Sunday after operations were suspended Saturday night.

The crash was so violent that one of the boats sank and the other sustained major damage, fire officials said.

Some passengers were reportedly thrown into the water by the force of the collision, or jumped, and were swept several miles down the river.

Both local authorities and other recreational boat owners searched the area Saturday, but the bodies of the two presumed dead have not yet been recovered.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who knew Chrisi Lewis and to the family and friends still searching the river for their loved ones", Herbst said.

Rescuers abandoned the search until Sunday morning because of the danger to divers working in the fast-flowing water after dark.
